Other cpo new recordings
« on: Monday 15 March 2010, 02:39 »
Also expected from cpo in March 2010 according to their website-
Gunter Raphael symphonies 2-5
Goepfert clarinet concertos
a new recording of Dvorak's A major cello concerto reconstruction with other cello and orchestra works

(Possibly more besides, but that's what I find)

Another composer to survive the Nazi regime - glad to hear that  Gunther Raphael 's(1903-60), symphonies are about to be released on CPO - something to look forward to !

a new recording of Dvorak's A major cello concerto reconstruction with other cello and orchestra works

Reconstruction? Is this:
A: The old orchestration, and all the cuts that entails, recorded on Supraphon before?
B: An orchestration of the complete cello/piano one?
C: Something else that would actually justify the 'reconstruction' term?

Here are some more details of the two releases:

http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/cpo/detail/-/art/Anton-Dvorak-Cellokonzert-A-Dur-Jugendkonzert-1865/hnum/2247015

http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/cpo/detail/-/art/G%FCnter-Raphael-Symphonien-Nr-2-5/hnum/8177587

Friends will notice that the Raphael release is a 3-CD set; also that only Symphonies 2 and 3 are modern recordings.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Raphael symphonies. I don't know the Fifth, nor the Choral Symphony, but Nos.2-4 are big, powerful pieces, not written in the romantic vein as such, but thoroughly accessible and tonal. If only more 20th century music had been like this.

Considering the timing and the way the it reads from translation, the Dvorak appears to be the old orchestration. Ah well. It's a nice piece anyway.
