It was the Cello Concerto that first turned me 'off' Tovey. Music doesn't have to be experimental to be ugly - it simply has to be poorly conceived and written. Sorry, folks but it's really not for me.

I disagree about "ugly."  I recall (haven't listened in a while) that Tovey's Piano Trios (on Toccata) were very good.  I'll have to spin the disc again - but I surely would not apply such a harsh criticism to this composer. And the Guild label recently released his String Quartet in G, the excerpts of which sound great.  Maybe Tovey's chamber music would appeal more?
