Dear members,

I have uploaded a recent Hungarian radio broadcast of Jenő Hubay's Petőfi Symphony, written in 1922 on poems of Sándor Petőfi. In 1923 Hungary celebrated the 100th birthday of the poet. Another 100 years on this broadcast marks his 200th birthday. However, I did cut out the extensive readings of his poetry between the movements.
You can find the original broadcast here:

Dear members,

I have uploaded for you a recent broadcast by Swedish radio P2.
This was a concert dedicated to Per-Ulrik Stenhammar, the father of Wilhelm. He was a renowned architect but also an accomplished composer. The two string quartets are the most substantial items but I decided to share the whole concert with you because it is such a rare occasion.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Maliszewski: Symphonies
Saturday 10 December 2022, 12:21
I know the radio broadcast of Symphony no. 1 for several years. Now I listened to Symphony no. 2 via spotify and wondered about the scherzo: I have heard this before! After comparing the scores it became obvious that spotify - and probably other streaming services as well - have swapped the scherzo mouvements of no. 1 and no. 2.
I noticed the same error when trying the samples at presto. So be warned if you stream or buy the digital release!

Rupert Marshall-Luck has recorded the Tovey recently. It has not been released so far I think.

Thank you, Rainolf!
The Wetz sonata has been a desideratum for a long time.

Quote from: eschiss1 on Thursday 17 November 2022, 12:11I know. Records International had it listed in April, though. Maybe it was available in the US earlier, despite being a cpo product? Curious.

That's quite possible: it has been aired by Classical 90.5 Arizona radio in August I think.

Composers & Music / Re: Sir Julius Benedict 1802 - 1885

Here is Damian Thompson, writing in The Spectator:

Our new monarch, by contrast, adores the Piano Concerto in E flat major by Julius Benedict (1804-85). He recommended it in an interview a couple of years ago. I'd never heard of the piece, which existed only in manuscript until Howard Shelley and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra recorded it for Hyperion in 2008. So I have our new king to thank for alerting me to this gorgeous confection – not quite a masterpiece, but full of pretty tunes connected by glittering filigree passagework that wears the poor pianist's fingers to the bone.

I do not have the CD-release but I have compared the stream at spotify with the version we once had in our downloads section. The ending is identical. But I agree, it sounds as if a tonal conclusion is missing. This then is a decision of the composer not the recording engineer, I think.  ;)

Composers & Music / Michael Ponti (1937-2022)

My local newspaper informed me that Michael Ponti died on Monday. We owe him great thanks for his pioneering recordings of unsung repertoire, many of which still unsurpassed.

Composers & Music / Re: 2023 Unsung Concerts

Horst Hegel, former leader of the Osnabrücker Sinfonieorchester, performed a rare violin concerto each season during the 1990s. That's how I came to know and love the Karlowicz concerto. Osnabrück in the nineties was a hot spot of rare repertoire. GMD Jean François Monnard had a special agenda: he conducted every piece only once during his tenure. The poor Mozart-Beethoven-Brahms-Bruckner-Tchaikovsky-loving community had to rely on the occasional guest conductor for the standard fare. I largely stopped going to concerts after his departure.
(Sorry for the lengthy side-trip.)

This programme (Die besondere Aufnahme) always features recordings which sooner or later will appear on disc or sometimes have just been released.

In most cases you can find the complete broadcast a day later here for downloading:

Martin, you are right: Lukasz Borowicz said in a recent interview with Deutschlandfunk Kultur that he will record the Scharwenka symphony for cpo. He was very enthusiastic about the work.

I've had confirmation that Raff's final great work, the oratorio Welt-Ende - Gericht - Neue Welt will be recorded by the Leipzig Gewandhaus choir. They gave a thrilling performance last week on Raff's 200th birthday at a concert in his birthplace of Lachen in Switzerland and will perform it again at the Gewandhaus itself next Monday. No details on the other performers, but the upcoming concert features the Camerata Lipsiensis, Andreas Wolf (baritone) and Marie Henriette Reinhold (alto), conducted by Gregor Meyer. I assume the recording will be issued by cpo (eventually) as part of their intermittent romantic oratorio series.

Yes, this source mentions that cpo will release it:

Dear members,
I have just uploaded a recent broadcast of a live performance of this symphony.
Like Fritz Volbach Grimm was important for the city of Münster as a conductor and teacher.
So it was the Sinfonieorchester Münster under Golo Berg which performed the work last December.
According to the WDR website Grimm finished the work in 1871. I could not find any confirmation for this assertion elsewhere but decided to tag it accordingly.

Both works/recordings are in our downloads archive kindly uploaded by Jerry in 2011. (German music folder).
The link should perhaps be removed
