Dear members,

I have uploaded a recent Hungarian radio broadcast of Jenő Hubay's Petőfi Symphony, written in 1922 on poems of Sándor Petőfi. In 1923 Hungary celebrated the 100th birthday of the poet. Another 100 years on this broadcast marks his 200th birthday. However, I did cut out the extensive readings of his poetry between the movements.
You can find the original broadcast here:

Dear members,

I have uploaded for you a recent broadcast by Swedish radio P2.
This was a concert dedicated to Per-Ulrik Stenhammar, the father of Wilhelm. He was a renowned architect but also an accomplished composer. The two string quartets are the most substantial items but I decided to share the whole concert with you because it is such a rare occasion.

Composers & Music / Michael Ponti (1937-2022)
Tuesday 18 October 2022, 21:20
My local newspaper informed me that Michael Ponti died on Monday. We owe him great thanks for his pioneering recordings of unsung repertoire, many of which still unsurpassed.

Dear members,

I failed to record a quartet for brass instruments by Erkki Melartin which was broadcast yesterday by Yle Klassinen. However, I noticed little play buttons which suggested to me that Yle Klassinen provides a listen again service. Unfortunately I couldn't make it play. Would any kind member perhaps like to try and tell me if / how it works?

Here is the link to the program which contains the Melartin quartet:

I have been waiting for a revival of Friedrich Theodor Fröhlich's Lieder since I first encountered five of them sung by Ernst Haefliger.
I couldn't imagine that a singer of acclaimed reputation would wish to study and perform them, though. Obviously Ian Bostridge thought high enough of them to present a complete song cycle to poems by Wilhelm Müller.
Swiss radio SRF2 will broadcast the concert in December:

Dear members, to celebrate Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's birthday I have uploaded a recording of a BBC broadcast of last October.
It is a performance of the African Suite by the Chineke! Orchestra.
My googling wasn't successful so I cannot tell you, if SCT orchestrated the work himself. Perhaps some of you know better?
IMSLP has the score of the piano version only.
Enjoy!  :)

Dear members,

I decided to upload a recording of orchestral works by Emilie Mayer and Friedrich Wilhelm Kücken.
I understand from interviews that at least the works by Mayer will be released by Dabringhaus und Grimm in autumn.
The files will have to be removed in time. I would appreciate a note in case I should forget about this!

Dear members,

I would like to share this recent performance of Bronsart's Piano Concerto with you.
It was broadcast as part of a lockdown concert without public attendance.
I did not listen myself yet but I thought you may be interested to compare it to the hyperion recording. The conductor is the same, Eugene Tzigane, but the pianist our indefatigable Oliver Triendl.
You will find it shortly in the downloads section I think.

Austrian radio Oe1 broadcast the first movement of Egon Kornauth's 1917 Piano Quartet recently.
It was first broadcast in a program called "Moderne Stunden" in 1952 alongside music by Hindemith and Schönberg.
This is such a charming piece that I thought I'd share it. The main subject is very memorable.
To make matters worse, the composer works heavily with it so you will end up with a nasty earworm.
What makes it so memorable?
It's more of a motto than a theme I think, the note values become gradually smaller which gives it a forward thrust.

Recordings & Broadcasts / British Clarinet Concertos
Tuesday 14 April 2020, 21:13
Dear members!
By chance I found this notice of a forthcoming recording:
https://www.tashmina.co.uk/news/robert-plane-to-record-with-bbc-scottish-and-martyn-brabbins/
The main interest of this board will be the concerto by Richard Walthew.
The notice is from April 2019 so the recordings should already have taken place.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Potter Symphony No.1 etc.

Dear members,

I would like to turn your attention to the following broadcast of Cipriani Potter's Symphony No. 1.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000h09l

Do you know more about this? Perhaps a complete cycle of recordings in the making?

Dear members,

last Sunday MDR Kultur broadcast a Nonet by Gustav Schreck.
I would like to upload the recording but hesitate for two reasons.
The announcer told that it was recorded by members of the MDR Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonie Gera-Altenburg for the MDR.
I am not sure if this is a coproduction with a record label. In that case an upload would discourage potential buyers.
I know, this is not handled that strictly here at UC so you might talk me round...

Another more troubling question: this is NOT the Nonet op. 40 but another unpublished one for strings and wind quintet.
The announcer didn't give an opus number nor a key nor a date of composition. She explained that it was performed from a fair copy located at the Leipziger Bach Archiv.
I tried to google for more information - in vain so far.
Perhaps there are members around with better sleuthing skills?

The orchestra on demand blog noticed a broadcast by Hungarian radio Bartok of the following two works:
Koessler: Symphonic Variations
Dohnányi: Stabat Mater
http://orchestraondemand.blogspot.com/

I followed the links but couldn't get the site play.
Does any of our kind members succeed in playing and recording these rarities?

Dear members,

The NDR Radiophilharmonie conducted by Leo McFall has recorded the first two symphonies by Emilie Mayer.
The announcer said that the CD will be released by cpo at the end of the year.
If you do not want to wait, you can access the stream for a couple of weeks here:

Dear members,

Last Friday Rheinberger's Requiem in B flat minor, op. 60 was broadcast in a recording from 1999 on BR-Klassik:
https://www.br-klassik.de/programm/radio/ausstrahlung-1214732.html
As far as I know there is no commercial recording of this work.
If there is any interest I will upload my recording later this week.

German radio station SWR2 has a daily programme called "Musikstunde". It's the German equivalent to "Composer of the week".
The coming week is dedicated to Raff. I do not think that any previously unrecorded works will be heard but I thought it worth mentioning.
I cannot remember any similar celebration of the life and works of Raff in recent years by a German radio station.
Each programme will be available as a stream for seven days. Afterwards the manuscript of each programme will be available as a pdf download.

Raffsche Raritäten - Zum Leben des Komponisten Joachim Raff

Recordings & Broadcasts / Eduard Herrmann Sextet op. 33
Friday 24 February 2017, 16:51
I have uploaded a recent broadcast of a Sextet by the German composer Eduard Herrmann (1850-1937).
The oboist of the ensemble, Nicolas Thiébaud, told how he discovered the piece. He was googling for music fitted to be performed by his unique ensemble of oboe, clarinet and strings and found the IMSLP site of this sextet, downloaded the score and was fascinated by the music. A nice story how the internet helps to discover rarely performed music.
You can listen to the whole concert if you like:
