Who has experience with this somewhat complicated player? The instructions are not the best, at least for me.

Originally released on Marco Polo 8.225028 in 1997 this unsung piece by Arensky was written in 1900 toward the end of his life and not performed until after his death in 1908, somewhat based on Lane's "An Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians" which gives us the principal theme a somewhat jittery introduction to this Cleopatra story. Can one hear Rimsky-Korsakov, his teacher, in it? You be the judge. It is a series of 14 dances which is seldom performed today. I still think it has some merit and should be listened to. Each dance has a unique sound to it and not having seen his only ballet cannot judge it on merits as to the dancing.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Daniel Auber 1782-1871
Friday 25 December 2020, 12:50
Naxos has offered three volumes of his orchestral overtures to renew interest in this mostly forgotten french comic opera writer. The overtures are very light and performed by a much smaller orchestra, which seems very familiar with his work.

Daniel-François-Esprit Auber was a leading composer of French opera from the 1820s onwards, collaborating from then for some thirty years with the librettist Augustin-Eugène Scribe. He is particularly known for his contributions to the genre of opéra-comique. However, one of his most famous works is Masaniello or La muette de Portici ('The Dumb Girl of Portici'), of which the first title is preferred in English. This work staged in Paris in 1828, began the era of French grand opera. Auber wrote a considerable quantity of music, vocal and instrumental, sacred and secular. He was respected by Rossini and Wagner and much honored by the state in his lifetime.

I have had fun listening to identifying classical music.

there were over 2100 broadcasts of the show.

For those of you who might be interested there is a new recording on Chandos CHSA 5200 which has the good sound of their super audio. Maybe I just like the material.

At one time he was extremely popular and today nothing save for a small amount of releases. I just ordered a made on demand Marco Polo release. Since this is my first experience with this process I'll be curious to see how its done as well as the quality. Anyone else tried this? My release will arrive tomorrow so I'll let you know.

Composers & Music / Sergey Taneyev
Thursday 21 September 2017, 23:13
Where I work part time at the thrift store I came upon a Naxos older release of some new material to me of Taneyev. The one that got got my attention is definitely unsunf which was his graduation piece, the overture in d minor. Has anyone any experience with this work and what is their opinion. The work seemed to me to be quite good for a graduation student piece. The release is on Naxos #8.570584 from 2007.

This is a re-release from 1985 and a  nice one. This release fits nicely in our unsung material. Very melodic and a nice variety featuring violin and harp on two selections. Available from BSX records in the US. If there are any questions I know the owners and can answer questions about the company or material.

Kreutzer: Septet, Op. 62 - Trio, Op. 43
Composer(s):   Kreutzer, Conradin
Artist(s):   Reissenberger, Benjamin; Himmelpfortgrund; Koch, Tobias; Azzolini, Sergio
Label:   CPO (CPO)
I was given this work as one of my choices to review next month. How does he fit into the forum if at all? I'm fairly busy as Naxos sent me the 30CD in 30 years box which is a lot of listening. By the way I saw the price on this at $34.00 a pretty good price.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Respighi Piano Concerto
Friday 21 April 2017, 20:57
Just received a new recording on the Centaur label (crc 3562) of an early work of Respighi (1902) of a 25 minute piano concerto. This is news to me as I guess I have his popular woks and nothing else. Any thoughts?

I received from Naxos a recording of Paul Badura-Skoda playing two war horses - Tchakovsky's First and also the first of Franz Liszt coupled with Rimsky Korsakov and his attempt at a piano concerto. These were recordings from Gramola and were all done in the 50s. Please explain how this makes sense other than a way to fill the CD/Download? The Rimsky piece is definitely unsung - in fact I last heard it on a Vox lp.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Vaughan Williams Film Music
Tuesday 20 September 2016, 21:54
While we can't consider Vaughan Williams unsung we can consider these minor film scores as music I'd not heard before. https://sdtom.wordpress.com/2016/09/17/vaughan-williams-film-music/. A nice addition to my collection.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Rediscovery
Thursday 28 July 2016, 17:24
For those who aren't familiar with it www.rediscovery.us is a free legal website that offers among other things some of the older Mercury Living Presence recordings. In particular for me I've discovered Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony. RD022 in particular really got my attention. The recordings are definitely sung works but I've discovered my favorite Cappriccio Espagnol ever. I'm really wondering from Adriano especially about this mono recording. I've got a setup where the amp switches to mono and a single speaker. There are other recordings of Paray including one where the musicians talk about him at the end of the recording.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Brilliant Classics
Sunday 03 July 2016, 17:22
I was doing a bit of reorganizing in my collection deciding to keep all labels together such as Naxos and Brilliant and I realized I had over 400 Brilliant CD's, yikes. I think collecting them is a good value because you're introduced to many unsung for a minimal amount of money. I got out my 10 CD set  of Borodin and save for the Prince Igor Opera they're isn't much that we can call welled played material. What opinions do we have/

Composers & Music / Unsung Grieg

I've been listening to Grieg's only symphony in C minor and have found it intriguing although there are some who disagree.

Naxos has finally gotten around to re-releasing this Marco Polo material of Nordgren. Since I've reviewed many of this series Naxos sent me a digital link to listen to this material for the very first time. As an added bonus Adriano is the conductor and was given original material by Nordgen. He died in 1992 but this recording took place prior to 1992. Being anxious to hear the material I downloaded it and it wouldn't open the zip file up. I tried two more times without success. Naxos has changed over to a new system and it hasn't worked correctly grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

You can always play your CDs on a DVD player...

I fear that the DVD is headed the same way as the CD. We'll be in a world of downloads.
