In the 60s, I got many of my LPs from the Squires Gate Long-Playing Record Library (Blackpool, UK), founded by Penguin Record Guide faithful Ivan March in the 1950s. Later called the Squires Gate Music Centre, with branches across the UK, it was also the source of a host of catalogies and hard-to-find discographies. Yes, LP's arriving by post was fun!

Yes, I agree, Alan. Like an empty chocolate box.....  ;D

As an early student of Arnold Schönberg, do we know if the music falls into UC's remit, Alan? I've never heard her music, nor even of her, so I have no idea myself.

Quote from: Gareth Vaughan on Monday 08 April 2024, 22:27.... I think Major is a truly undeservedly unsung composer.

What evidence do we have to support that view, Gareth?

Quote from: Alan Howe on Monday 08 April 2024, 20:42It sounds like a cross between a barrel-organ and a squeezebox. Truly awful.

That is unfair to barrel-organs and accordions!  ;D

Alan, thank you so much for drawing attention to this wonderful release, and for explaining the background. For one reason or another, there is still a lot of VW's music that has never been recorded, and it's heartening to see something new being issued. Martin Yates is a champion!

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Enescu Piano Quartet No.1
Thursday 04 April 2024, 08:02
The coupling with Faure would mean doubling or tripling-up, but fortunately for me the CPO version of Enescu's 1st and 2nd piano quartets are up on YT! Not wanting to re-visit the issue again, but I am still baffled by this.

I love the music of Tcherepnin, especially the piano works, so thanks for that, Alan. Definitely worth investigating.

I assume this is the same Moser:

This CD has been uploaded to YT, apparently by I Tempi.

At last! It's the charming set of English Folk Dances by Ernest Tomlinson, starting with "Jenny Pluck Pears". now I can sleep easy!  ;D

I liked the sound of the piano concerto and constantly felt I should be enjoying it more than I did. It sounds to me like someone trying to play Rachmaninov but getting half the notes wrong.
I suppose that's chromaticism for you!  ;D

I echo the previous comments. Enjoyable, but so many trills in the middle movement that I really wanted to 'fast forward'! The last movement scamper reminded me of Litolff. It was composed before 1924 (per imslp), but I wonder how long before? In fact, I have been unable to discover any of the dates of Lange's compositions, as he doesn't appear in any of my regular sources.

Have you identified this yet, Christopher? It is so familiar to me, and yet I can't name it. It's very frustrating!  :-\

Thank you for this, Christopher. I have only listened once through, but I've really enjoyed it. As the  piece above says, it is truly "a celebration of the people, the embodiment of youth and zest for life, a manifestation of determination and inspiration with which people face tomorrow despite all troubles". And, how heartening to see so many young performers throwing themselves into the music - a gathering dedicated to music-making, while the Russian invasion rages beyond.
