Lots of unsung piano pieces, in particular Hélène de Montgeroult, Mel Bonis, Cécile Chaminade, Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelsohn as well as late-romantic Anton Rubinstein, Mykola Lysenko or Levko Revutsky.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Gounod: mélodies
Saturday 01 September 2018, 11:25
A choice of 24 mélodies by Gounod, most in French, some in English and in Italian. All are performed by Greek baryton Tassis Christoyannis and Jeff Cohen, who continue with their anthology of unsung French mélodies. As always, Christoyannis's French diction is absolutely perfect. No one interested in French mélodies should miss this one.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Berlioz: Les Troyens
Thursday 21 June 2018, 13:06
A video broadcast of Berlioz's Les Troyens is available until July 14 (Bastille day!) here: https://operavision.eu/en/library/performances/operas/les-troyens by the Dutch National Opera and Ballet conducted by John Nelson. I've not listened to the 4 hours performance yet. But it includes a scene which is new to me from 42:20 to 49:00, showing a Greek soldier called Sinon.
Subtitles in French and English.
See the link for full cast.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Méhul - Uthal
Saturday 11 February 2017, 10:23
In the Palazzetto Bru Zane, Méhul's Uthal has just been released, by Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques. I've not checked if it is the complete opera and I've not seen the normally extensive booklet.
I'd uploaded a radio broadcast or it, which should be deleted and had no cut (according to the score available on imslp).

Recordings & Broadcasts / Saint-Saëns Mélodies
Tuesday 04 October 2016, 22:28
Aparté has just released a CD of Camille Saint-Saëns's mélodies by Tassis Christoyannis and Jeff Cohen. The same singer had previously recorded mélodies by Félicien David, Edouard Lalo and Benjamin Godard. I've not listened to this one yet. In any case I have to say that Cristoyannis's French diction is perfect.
It will be available November 25 on Amazon. It can be streamed or downloaded from Qobuz already.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Eugène Ysaÿe: Poèmes
Friday 20 May 2016, 13:29
After the first volume titled "Harmonies du Soir et autres poèmes", a second volume of Ysaÿe's poèmes has just been released by Musique en Wallonie. This one is titled "Neiges d'Antan et autres poèmes", by Orchestre Philarmonique Royal de Liège under Jean-Jacques Kantorow and various soloists.

Harmonies du Soir contains
Méditation for cello and orchestra, Op. 16
Harmonies du Soir for string quartet and orchestra, Op. 31
Poème Elégiaque for violin and orchestra, Op. 12
Sérénade for cello and orchestra, Op. 22
Amitié for two violins and orchestra, Op. 26
Exil for string orchestra, Op. 25

Neiges d'Antan contains only works for violin and orchestra
Extase, Op. 21
Divertimento, Op. 24
Chant d'Hiver, Op. 15
Neiges d'Antan, Op. 23
Rêve d'Enfant, Op. 14
Au Rouet, Op. 13
Berceuse, Op. 20

I could not find a complete catalogue of Ysaÿe's works. It seems that only a couple of poèmes is missing. Maybe a third volume... Missing from those volumes are Poème Nocturne for violin, cello and orchestra, Op. 29, Fantasia for violin and orchestra, Op. 32 and a Saltarelle Carnavalesque for violin and orchestra, Op. 11 (?)

I've seen this set of 3 CD's on Qobuz this morning, with all concertante works of Lalo. The Symphonie Espagnole and the cello concerto are well known, which is not the case of the other two violin concertos and even less known is the piano concerto. It will be available on amazon on March 25.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Louis Thirion: Chamber music
Monday 26 October 2015, 15:43
Thanks to a 5000 euros contribution by the public, Timpani is able to release in March 2016 a CD containing two unsung works by Louis Thirion, his piano trio by Trio Elegiaque, and his string quartet by Quatuor Stanislas. Both works are from 1908-1909.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Lekeu: Complete works
Thursday 27 August 2015, 11:53
The publisher outthere http://www.outhere-music.com has announced a new release of Lekeu's complete works, issued under the label Ricercar from 1987 to 1994. The box consists of 8 cd's, and contains almost all of Lekeu's works (some early ones have been omitted). It also includes an extensive booklet (English, French and German), which can be freely downloaded http://www.outhere-music.com/en/albums/les-fleurs-pales-du-souvenir-complete-works-ric-351. The box is available from the publisher, from amazon and presumably for downloading from various providers (among them qobuz) for 35 euros or less.

Don't miss it!

The inaugural concerts of the new "Philharmonie de Paris" concert hall go on with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, conducted by Laurence Equilbey (mostly renowned for conducting the Accentus chorus - and a distant relative of mine).
Four overtures, the first two quite unsung:
Max Bruch - Die Loreley
Fanny Mendelssohn - Overture in C
Felix Mendelssohn - The Hebrides
Franz Schubert - The Enchanted Harp, later used for Rosamunde.
Concert given 17 January 2015.

Link active until 17 July 2015.

Seen on qobuz.com: http://www.qobuz.com/fr-fr/album/quintettes-pour-piano-et-cordes-jean-pierre-wallez-yoe-miyazaki-henri-demarquette/3610159542176

Franck's in F minor (1879) is very well known. Vierne's masterpiece in C minor (1917) is beginning to be part of the classics. Saint-Saëns's op. 14 (1855) is an early work. While Widor's in D minor op. 7 (1868?) is already available on Naxos, his D major op. 68 (1894) is an absolute rarity!

Only streaming is announced for December 15... Will it be available for downloading, will it ever be published in physical format or for downloading anywhere else? I couldn't find any information on the web...

Another Belgian composer absolutely unknown to me. I'm listening to his quartet, strongly reminiscent of Lekeu's works. This quartet was praised by Vincent d'Indy. On the same record the violin sonata, both from 1915-16. Scores available at http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Antoine,_Georges. Also available is a record of "mélodies", which I'll try to find.
No biography in English, I can only redirect to http://www.bayard-nizet.com/Antoine_fr.html, a short bio in French.

Just found  a broadcast on France Musique with the cello sonata by unsung French composer Joseph Boulnois (1884 - 1918). It's available on streaming (http://www.francemusique.fr/emission/le-concert-de-midi-et-demi-du-lundi-au-vendredi/2014-ete/autour-de-1914-partie-2-avec-marie-catherine-girod-antoine), with a piece by Georges Samazeuilh and Vierne's magnificent quintet, until September 7, 2014.

Biography of Joseph Boulnois available (in French) at http://www.musimem.com/boulnois.htm
