Recordings & Broadcasts / Dorothy Howell
Monday 29 January 2024, 17:44
Now here is something to look forward to: https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/9591636--dorothy-howell-orchestral-works

It certainly whets my appetite. Dorothy Howell knew how to write for the orchestra - and this disk seems to cover all of her extant orchestral music (with the exception of the piano concerto which has already been recorded twice). I hope (and expect) that this new recording of "Lamia" will supersede the old Cameo Classics one (now re-released and remastered by Lyrita) which, although serviceable, could have been better.

Composers & Music / Richard Stöhr Symphonies Nos. 2-7

I believe most of his manuscripts are in an archive at St Michael's College, Vermont, where he taught.

Composers & Music / Hyperion Records sold to Universal
Saturday 25 February 2023, 21:03
One of the brightest stars among independent labels has been acquired by corporate giant Universal. Probably very bad news for lovers of high standards and interesting repertoire. One can't blame Simon Perry, who had probably had enough of the recording industry, but it is a very sad day. It is doubtful that, under Universal, the label will make any more new recordings.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Lao Silesu
Tuesday 28 July 2020, 11:13
Does anyone have a recording of the piano concerto by Lao Silesu they could copy for me, please - for private use of course? There used to be a recording on the Italian Inedita label, but this has long been unavailable. I have written to Inedita twice, but received no reply and have so far failed to locate a secondhand copy. I have also failed to find a copy of the score, and am wondering if the recording was made using a ms. which may be in the collection of the pianist, Roberto Plana, and otherwise unavailable. Any help would be gratefully received.

Composers & Music / Roger Coke Concert
Wednesday 07 February 2018, 22:45
Members may like to know that I have organised a chamber music concert at St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge, London on Tuesday 12th of June at which a piano trio headed by Simon Callaghan (piano) will play the following programme:
Rachmaninov: Trio Élégiaque No.1 in G minor
Coke: Elegiac Trio in C minor Op. 32
Schubert: Trio in E flat D929

More details will follow shortly.

Composers & Music / Philip Scharwenka VC
Monday 09 October 2017, 13:34
I see that Musikproduktion Hoeflich (MPH) https://repertoire-explorer.musikmph.de/ have just published a new edition of Philip Scharwenka's splendid VC. Let us hope this will encourage a recording.

Members of this forum may like to know that the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra completed recording sessions on 15 June for a CD in Hyperion's RPC series containing the Bronsart & Urspruch PCs. That is all I know - I do not have the details of the soloist or the conductor (though the latter is probably Brabbins).

Recordings & Broadcasts / Jozef Krogulski
Wednesday 22 March 2017, 23:48
Does anyone have a recording of Krogulski's Variations for piano & orchestra in the form of a Krakowiak? I believe there was an old Polish Radio recording of the Variations. Don't know the pianist, however. Howard Shelley has performed the 1st Piano Concerto. I have searched for the 2nd Piano Concerto but have been advised by a Polish expert that the score is lost - alas!

Composers & Music / Ewald Straesser (1867-1933)
Sunday 05 February 2017, 16:18
Does anyone know where I can find a full score of Straesser's PC, Op. 8 (performance on You Tube)? The Ewald Streaesser Gesellschaft's website (http://ewaldstraesser.kulturserver-nrw.de/) is opaque to say the least. The Home page contains a welcome message stating: "In the menu bar you will find a download area with audio samples under the extensions in the shop. There is also a contact link and a guestbook." I can find none of these things on the menu bar which, perversely, appears at the bottom of the page!

Recordings & Broadcasts / Joseph Holbrooke on CPO
Monday 21 December 2015, 17:54
I have just been informed that CPO have planned a third CD of music by Joseph Holbrooke. It will contain: Symphony No. 3 "Ships"; Orchestral Variations on "The Girl I Left Behind Me" and the tone poem "The Birds of Rhiannon". The orchestra is the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie Saarbrücken/Kaiserlautern under Howard Griffiths and the recording sessions are scheduled for the end of January 2016. This will be a very important CD.
Unfortunately, there is still no definite news about the release date of CPO's second Holbrooke CD (recorded nearly 2 years ago), which contains the "Grasshopper" Violin Concerto, the Orchestral Variations on "Auld Lang Syne" and the tone poem "The Raven", except that it should be sometime next year (2016). Let us hope so. The orchestra was the Brandenburgishes Staatsorchester under Howard Griffiths and the soloist in the concerto was Judith Ingolfsson. Let us hope it will not long be delayed.

Composers & Music / Otto Singer
Tuesday 09 December 2014, 16:31
Does anyone know where the MSS of Otto Singer (the elder) are - or if, indeed, they are still extant? He is supposed to have written 2 Piano Concertos, but only one seems to have been published, Op. 8 - score & parts in Fleisher. There is also a Rhapsodie for piano & orchestra, available in the 2 piano version from IMSLP. If all the performance materials could be found the 2 PCs and the Rhapsodie might make up a CD for Hyperion. Fleisher also has a violin concerto. A symphony is supposed to have existed in MS.

I enquired of Chandos about their plans for further recordings with Jarvi of Raff and Rufinatscha, and received the following reply:

The Raff was a first volume in a new series, with another 3 volumes planned. I do not have any further information on when the next volume will be available as yet, but I expect it will be sometime in 2014. The Rufinatscha I believe was a stand-alone disc, and there are no further volumes in the pipeline. I hope this helps.

So, definitely not a Raff symphony cycle - and very disappointing that no further Rufinatscha disks are planned.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Awaited CPO Recordings
Thursday 30 May 2013, 18:24
I learned today from Franz Groborz that the recording sessions for Holbrooke's "Auld Lang Syne" Variations with the Brandenburgisher Staatsorchester, scheduled for May, have had to be postponed. This is a pity as this work would have completed the disk containing Holbrooke's VC and The Raven. Franz does not yet have a new date.
HOWEVER, disappointing as this undoubtedly is for us, the reason the sessions were postponed was so that the orchestra could finish recording the Jadassohn symphonies. The last session was today. So, at least, these are now in the bag and - who knows? - we may get an autumn release.
Someone (not me) may like to write to Herr Schmilgun and say we are all looking forward to the Jadassohn.

Composers & Music / Martin Wegelius
Saturday 13 April 2013, 18:57
Last night was sleepless for me so I had Radio 3 on and, at about 2.45am, they played a Rondo quasi fantasia for piano & orchestra by Martin Wegelius which I thought was truly delightful.  Did anyone happen to record it by any chance?

I may have asked this before, so please forgive me if I have, but what has happened to the Chandos Forums? They seem to have been taken down altogether.

Composers & Music / Jozef Otto af Sillen

Can anyone direct me to the whereabouts of the MSS of this composer?  I did locate them once, but I seem to have deleted the file where I noted what was extant, and where it was.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Dutton Releases 2013
Tuesday 12 February 2013, 21:36
A little bird tells me that, apart from the d'Erlanger disk already discussed on this forum (on which, by the way, it is confirmed that Guy Johnston will be the cello soloist in the Ballade and Andante Symphonique), Dutton will shortly release early piano and cello concertos, respectively, by Cyril Scott (edited, and to some extent reconstructed, by Martin Yates) and a disk containing Widor's Cello concerto and 2nd Symphony.
