How many works are there in the collection Op.57?? (Or in the collection Op.196??)

I didn't undestrstand what you mean, but basically he composed 60 piano sonatas (3 of them are also intended for organ), 4 sonatinas and another sonata that is not included with the other 60 but is a sonata.
If you are asking about ALL of his works, well... I aproximate 300 or 400 works, scattered through collections of pieces as his 4 pieces Op.131 or his Skizzen-Buch Op.143, wich contains 21 pieces.

I'm not sure what was difficult about my question? You describe this work as his piano sonata, no.7 of the collection Op.57 (Op.57 No.7). I'm asking how many works Op.57 contains. Beethoven's piano sonata sets Op. 2 Nos. 1-3, Op. 10 Nos. 1-3, Op.31 Nos.1-3 come to mind as similar collections.

Perhaps it's just the other way around, that it's the 7th sonata by the composer? I understood the description as: "Piano Sonata No.7, Op.57".

That would be the way of writing it if so, yes, the other has a rather different meaning. I try to let the author tell me rather than guessing.

Oh was that! Op.57 has only his 7th piano sonata. I write that in this way "Op. 57 No.7" but I understand that most people does like this "No. 7 Op.57".
