As a contribution to the Year of the Clarinet 2015 (as declared by the "Schweizer Blasmusikverband SBV") the music school of the Swiss town of Burgdorf will perform a newly orchestrated version of the opera "Der Klarinettenmacher" by Friedrich Weigmann (1869-1939) with a libretto by Georg Richard Kruse. The opera, of which only a piano score appears to have survived, is set in old Nuremberg, with Johann Christoph Denner, the inventor of the clarinet, as the protagonist. It was first performed in Bamberg in 1913 and thereafter in a number of other towns before it was forgotten. According to the music school the opera is late romantic in style, a German article places it in the comic opera tradition of Lortzing and Marschner. The premiere will be on 31 December at the Casino Theater Burgdorf.
