Charles Auguste de Beriot   Born Louvain 20.2.1802   Died Brussels  8.4.1870

One of the most celebrated violin virtuosi of his time.  He made his first public appearance at the age of nine.  Ten years later he went to Paris to study under Giovanni Viotti and Pierre Baillot. While in Paris he was appointed 'Chamber musician to the King'. Between the years 1826-1830 he held the post of 'Solo violinist to the King of the Netherlands'. He bacame professor of violin at the Brussels Conservatory in 1843, a post he held until 1852.  Apart from his career as a virtuoso violinist he was also a highly successful composer mostly for his own instrument.  He composed many duets for violin and piano in collaboration with George Osborne. He visited London in 1826.  Many of his works have been recorded.

He travelled extensively with Maria Malibran, whom he subsequently married. They had a son Charles-Wilfred de Beriot 1 1833-1914 who became a successful composer and concert pianist. After the death of Maria Malibran he married Marie Huber in 1840. The last twelve years of his life were largely inactive owing to increasing blindness and paralysis in an arm.

Apart from music he was a landscape painter, a sculptor and a mechanic.

On the Talent label there's a "Grand Trio, op. 64" which I've been enjoying a lot recently.

Gareth Vaughan

As readers will be aware Naxos have recorded violin concertos 1-9, and I was expecting them to complete the VCs with a disk of No. 10, perhaps coupled with some of the smaller concertante pieces for violin and orchestra. Sadly, this has not materialised.

Ilja

Surely the availability of unsung music has come a long way if someone's complaining that "only" nine violin concertos of a a certain composer have been recorded...

Sorry.  ;D

Gareth Vaughan

Yes. I know. I'm never satisfied, am I?

Alan Howe

I'm not really convinced of the quality of the VCs. They're all pretty generic and of moderate interest.
