Have finally given this another, better listen. Oddly, it seems closer to Schumann 4 now than any Brahms precursor, though I find I like it anyway :) (which I generally don't with Schumann's 4th in its revised version.)

It's the first movement that distinguishes Grimm's Symphony from its predecessors - more than a hint of Bruckner, surely? And Chris Fifield has a lot to say about possible connections with/influences on Brahms 1 in his book - worth reading, by the way, Eric. Perhaps you could find a library copy?

I think I borrowed an interlibrary-loan copy awhile ago but can do so again after having heard more of the works in it...

I've been away from this forum for some time but have just seen that the Golo Berg/Münster recording of Grimm's Symphony and Second Suite in Canon Form was released on CD on 4th July, according to the Presto Music website. Is this the first CD of this work ever to appear? I've not come across another. If so, hopefully it will help to increase awareness of this work. The recording appears to be the one which has been available on YouTube for a while.

Yes, definitely. As for wider awareness of the Symphony, we can only hope...
