The last point you make, Alan, is very important. It is essential that this shameful misattribution be corrected.

Two of the concertos are in full score at imslp; Fleisher has the parts but they could be extracted without Fleisher...

I don't get into Wikipedia editing, but I think the last sentence of the plagiarism section of the Kauffmann entry should be changed from:

"The recognition of Kauffmann's symphony as plagiarism by Franke led to various similar identifications."

to

"The recognition of Franke's symphony as a plagiarism of Kauffmann led to various similar identifications."

Gareth Vaughan

Yes, John  that is clearer and better English.

After some absence from UC I have finally caught up with the Franke affair and with this thread on Kauffmann. May I say, most sincerely, heartfelt congratulations to all involved in exposing the abominable behaviour of the former and asserting the artistic rights and merits of the latter. What wonderful and talented people we have on UC. I am in awe!

Thanks for this notification, Ilja.

Judging by the quality of his Symphony, this is encouraging news, thanks.

Alan Howe

It'll be released by cpo, according to the video.

Ilja

Ah thanks, I had missed that. It's a substantial piece (around 40 minutes, I believe), so I'm curious what they'll combine it with.

Also, when I asked the venue at the time whether it'd be broadcast or recorded they denied that, so this is a pleasant surprise.

In a recent concert the pianist programmed it with Brahms' 2nd Piano Trio, which lasts around 30 minutes, so maybe that will be the coupling.

For some labels yes- a little surprised if cpo programs it that way, they may prefer to find another piano trio work that people are less likely to have already. (I have two recordings of the Brahms trio, for example, three or more if you count freely available downloads.) But I could be wrong.

Ilja

It's quite common for labels to market unsung pieces this way, though, hoping to win people over for the scary unknown bit of music by offering something familiar. But generally it just means that you duplicate the better-known work in your collection. One of the reasons I'm so happy with the possibility to purchase individual tracks.

Oh, agreed - it seems very rare that cpo, specifically, does so (I think?) (Naxos does so effectively afaik, e.g. Shostakovich/Weinberg, and so do others.) I should probably have refrained from attacking the practice, which can I agree work very well.
