Composers & Music / Re: The music of Erkki Melartin
Sunday 23 August 2009, 04:11
Because of this thread I purchased this set when it was posted. I don't know where my mind was on the first listening through but I am finding these symphonies extremely delightful and want to thank Dennis for brining them to our attention. Upon a closer listen I am beginning to apprecaite the genius that was Melartin and I would highly recommend the complete symphonies and the violin concerto to anyone who enjoys Mahler, Sibelius or Bruckner. The 4th symphony has to be one of the most haunting I have ever heard and sometimes I hear shades of Howard Hanson. If you like any of of the composers I have mentions then I think Melartin is a must have. I only wish we had more of his music!

Those all sound really good there Alan! I'll probably be ordering all those Naxos CDs. I wish they were available from Naxo US though. I did see several other titles of his composition on Amazon. I'll probably have to pick those up also. Good find! Thanks!!

Well, I'm glad you were able to get it Alan! I'm not sure how the radio recorder thing works. Does it just capture an internet stream at the time of the broadcast? If so what is the audio quality like? The user on DIME that I mentioned wrote me today and said he was able to record it and will be putting it up on the torrents after he gets more information from the radio station. Probably tomorrow.

There's a guy on Dimeadozen who posts radio broadcasts from Germany all the time and his recordings are very good. I'll check with him and see if he is in a position to capture it and post it on the torrents.

Well, one thing Collectorz lets you do is view the data before you enter it into the database. That way you can make sure you have the correct title. Seems to work pretty well as far as I can tell and I have some old CDs in my collection.

The easiest and best method I know of is from Colectorz.com. You can easily add your entire library to the database. You can then upload your database in html to the internet or upload it to your I-phone as a music application. When you enter a title the software searches onlune databases and adds the title and album images to your data. The cost is very reasonable too! I think you can even download a trial version so you can see if you like it. I own the movie version too and they provide free updates through so many versions of the software.

Composers & Music / Re: John Field Piano concerti

I love the O'Rourke series! I think he is an excellent pianist and Chandos does a superb job with the production of the concertos. I personally can't choose which is my favorite as I love them all, but if I had to live with just one it would probably be #2.

I'm afraid that I loathe most variants of jazz with a passion - it seems such a self indulgent form of music.

Mark - I must not comprehend or understand your use of self-indulgent. If the common use is used as meaning as "one too ready to satisfy their own desires" than almost every classical composer falls into that category and every other artist for that matter. In some ways jazz can be a higher expression than classical. The impromptu nature of the genre tests the abilities of even the most skilled players. Many people can play notes written on paper but few are gifted to transcend those notes to take you to greater heights. I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of jazz. I personally think much of it is brilliant, but I also confess some of it is rubbish (kind of like classical music).

I don't know who would qualify as Unsung but I know of a few guitar concertos worth checking out.

Mauro Giuliani - Guitar Concerto in A major Op. 30
Heitor Villa-Lobos - Guitar Concerto for Orchestra (1951)
Manuel Ponce - Concierto del sur

A more modern concerto, but in my opinion most beautiful, would be a guitar concerto written and performed by the jazz guitarist John McLaughlin. It's called The Mediterranean.

Thank you Peter! I will be ordering a few titles this weekend. I am a little confused that some of the titles seem to be listed twice or are these the same symphonies performed by two different orchetras?

I've tried my best search skills and have been unable to locate anywhere his music on CD can be purchased. Anyone know?

I admit to having over 2000 soundtrack CD's in my collection and while I agree that some are difficult to listen to many are not.

Wow Thoma! Over 2000? That is amazing! I don't even have that many classical CDs. I have maybe ten soundtracks and most of those are Star Trek. I had seen the Naxos ones on Naxos Direct and was interested in checking some of them out. I think some are listed in their current $2.99 sale.

Composers & Music / Re: Opera -- Where to Start?
Monday 22 June 2009, 06:54
As I have stated in another thread "I hate opera"! I have only one exception and that is....PUCCINI! He was a master craftsman of melody. I have heard many operas, even though I don't care for them, but Puccini stands heads above any other opera composer in my book.

Glad you could take part.   I probably should have gotten more, but I already told my wife what I was spending.   ;D

See! Now that's where you went wrong!  :D I ordered and then told her I ordered but never told her how much!  ;D I use the old "easier to ask forgiveness than permission" method!
