Composers & Music / Aldo Finzi (1897-1945)
Wednesday 01 May 2013, 11:26
The Italian composer Aldo Finzi was until recently a totally unknown name to me. But after listening to some of his music I think he deserves a mention on the forum.
Personally, I find Finzi's music much in debt to Respighi, with a hint of Richard Strauss here and there. Finzi obviously loved to compose for a large orchestra often including the piano for added effect, and the symphonic poem was his preferred musical form. He experienced a lot of personal distress during WWII, which led to his premature death in 1947, and especially the Il Salmo for chorus and orchestra reflects these difficult times.
The Aldo Finzi Diacronia Association was established in 1998 led by Bruno Finzi, the son of the composer. They have established a quite informative website about Aldo Finzi, so I will not use this post to repeat all the information already written there. (The composer must not be mistaken for the other Aldo Finzi, an Italian politician)
Have a read!

http://www.aldo-finzi.com/ENG/Home.html

Bel Air Music in cooperation with the Aldo Finzi Association has released several CDs with music by the Finzi coupled with various couplings by other composers.
As far as I can see, all releases are still available, wether you prefer downloads or CDs. Check out Bel Air Music, amazon, MDT, itunes etc. The website of Bel Air Music also contains the sleeve notes for each CD. There is also a CD with chamber music from Nuova Era. The label Preludio have also released 2 CDs plus a 3 CD Best of-set.

The following compositions are available (I might have missed some):

Orchestral:
Pastoralina - 1920; Piano piece orchestrated for small orchestra by Gian Paolo Sanzogno
Cirano di Bergerac - Symphonic poem, 1929
Inni alla notte (Hymns to the Night) - Symphonic poem, 1932
L'infinito - Symphonic poem, 1933
Interludio - for piano and chamber orchestra, 1936-37
Nunquam - Sinfonia Romana - Symphonic poem, 1937
Danza - For orchestra with two pianos and two saxophones
Come all'ultimo suo ciascuno artista - Symphonic poem, 1942-43
Il Salmo - Psalm for chorus and orchestra, 1944-45
Shylock - Overture

Chamber/Instrumental/Songs:
Violin Sonata
String Quartet
Berceuse - for cello and piano
Duo Valzer lenti - for piano
Pavana - for piano, 1920
Toccata - for piano, 1930
Preludio e fuga - for organ, 1944
Liriche - Songs for soprano and piano
Pastoralina - for cello and piano
Tempo di fox-trot - for piano
Tempo di Marcia - for piano
Piccola berceuse - for viola and piano

Not recorded:
Il Chiostro (The Cloister) - for female voices and orchestra
La Serenata al Vento - Comic opera
Shylock - Opera (unfinished)

Where to start? My suggestion would be the symphonic poems Inni alla notte (Hymns to the night - 1932) or Cirano di Bergerac (1929).

The Russian State Orchestra conducted by Dimitry Yablonsky and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine conducted by Nicola Giulani are playing on the records that I have purchased. The sound is not topnotch, and I find the string sections a bit thin at times. But they are not at all bad. Maybe Aldo Finzi could be of interest for the Naxos Italian series or Maestro Noseda and Chandos!?

I would guess that alberto has something to say about Aldo Finzi!?

I've never heard of this Swiss composer before, and I haven't been able to find much information about him or his music. But since he was a pupil of Draeseke maybe some members here can tell us a bit more?

An interesting release of some orchestral music:

I don't know the French language very well, but from reading the article linked below; I understand that Timpani will release a disc containing Napoléon Henri Reber's Piano Trios nos. 3, 5 & 7 in the spring. There are also excerpts from the recording.

Composers & Music / Help/advice needed
Friday 22 February 2013, 16:34
Sorry for posting this here, didn't really know where to put it. But the forum is a place to go for some advice.. I'm trying to organize my music collection, and the language I'm using is English. I'm not.
I need some help clarifying the difference in use of the terms chorus and choir.
What's the difference? A work for chorus and orchestra, or choir and orchestra? Is it a men's choir/chorus or male choir/chorus, female choir/chorus or women's chorus/choir? Help needed!

And: Is it common to use capital letters in work titles? F. ex The Isle of the Dead instead of The isle of the dead?

Recordings & Broadcasts / The Lindeman Legacy from Simax
Thursday 31 January 2013, 21:18
This is a re-release of a 1983 vinyl set, now available on 3 Cd's for the first time. And here are some rarities. The Lindeman family were very influential church musicians and folk music collectors in Norway. The composers from the Lindeman family represented on these Cd's are:

Ludvig Mathias Lindeman (1812-1887): Piano pieces, organ works and choral songs
Anna Severine Lindeman (1859-1938): String Quartet in G minor and Piano pieces
Peter Brynie Lindeman (1858-1930): Piano pieces
Just Riddervold Lindeman (1822-1894): String Quartet in D minor and piano pieces
Ole Andreas Lindeman (1769-1857): Piano pieces

Einar Steen-Nøkleberg and Eva Knardahl are the pianists, Kåre Nordstoga plays the organ, and the choral works are performed by Malmö Chamber Choir.
The Copenhagen String Quartet performs the two quartets.

http://www.grappa.no/en/simax-classics/the-lindeman-legacy/

At the bottom of the page, you will find a link to the informative booklet. Unfortunately I've not been able to hear the excerpts. Seems to be an error somewhere..

The set can be bought at a very reasonable price:

Catharinus Elling was first and foremost a composer of songs.
But he also composed in larger formats, an opera; The Cossacks, 2 symphonies and a violin concerto.
His music was clear-structured and harmonically uncomplicated, and folk music grew more and more important to Elling over the years.
Simax have released a splendid recording of Elling's two String Quartets and also a disc with some of his songs.
The Violin Concerto is coupled with the D major Quartet on an old NKF-CD.

His output consists of several works for chorus and large orchestra, and his music show little influence of folk music. In his time, Selmer was considered musically radical within Norway.

With 5 symphonies to his name Ole Hjellemo stands out from most of his contemporary colleagues in Norway. Hjellemo taught the violin, harmony and composition at the Conservatory in Oslo for many years. He also served as Lieutenant in the Norwegian army and composed a large body of music for Military bands which gained a certain popularity. But other genres of his output have been neglected. At present I don't know any recordings of his works.

Eivind Groven rearranged a lot of his works, used related material in different compositions and orchestrated many of his piano pieces and songs (most of the works for voice and/or small orchestra in this catalogue are orchestrations of piano pieces or songs originally for voice and piano).
So his catalogue is a bit chaothic, but I believe this one is without any major works missing. There are some substantial works here that I really would like to see recorded, first of all the symphonic poems Renaissance and Historical Visions. The translations are all mine, please have me excused.

I name that has occurred in several other Swedish composer's biographies is Olallo Morales. Morales' father was Spanish and his mother Swedish. After the death of his father; Morales and his mother moved from Spain to Sweden when the young composer was only seven years old.
He studied at the Conservatory in Stockholm, then worked as a conductor for the Gothenburg SO 1911-18 in addition to a post as music critic in the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.
He moved back to Stockholm and taught at the Conservatory there until 1939.

This is the major works of his I've been able to find information about:

1898/1910 - Concert Overture Försommar (Spring)
1900/01 - Symphony in G minor
1926 - Overture Abu Cassem's Slippers for tenor and orchestra
1943 - Concerto for violin and orchestra in D minor
1944 - Camacho's Wedding Ballet
1948 - Concert Overture Sommarmusik (Summer music)
1952/53 - Triptycon for orchestra - Fantasia, Passacaglia and Invocation
1954 - Festspel for orchestra
Berceuse for flute, violin and orchestra, Op. 3b
Serenade for orchestra, Op. 4
Andante lugubre for orchestra, Op. 10
Nostalgia for orchestra, Op. 15
Passacaglia for violin and orchestra in D major
Till Hembygden (To my Home Village) for choir and orchestra

In addition there are some orchestrations of original setting for voice and piano.

I've never heard anything of Morales' music but there's one recording of his piano music available:

Maybe, just maybe are cpo now embarking on a cycle of recordings of Woyrsch' orchestral music (I wouldn't be surprised!).
MD&G recorded the 1st. Symphony back in 1994, and it's seems obvious that they won't release any followups.
I wasn't impressed by the music on that disc, I shall give it another go. And I will look forward to this release! To my knowledge the 2nd symphony receives its first recording here. It's in C major and was composed in 1914.
I don't have any info about the Overture, yet..

I've for a long time been aware of a post at the Chandos-forum written by Ralph Couzens of Chandos in June 2010:

"The Grainger edition was to have been completed by Richard Hickox of course with the final and biggest one of all featuring many musicians and choruses.
This will now take place in Melbourne with the MSO and conducted by Sir Andrew Davis
As far as Chandos is concerned this will probably complete our survey of Grainger."

Does anyone have any knowledge about this final volume and what the contents might be?
I'm especially curious since this will involve "many musicians and choruses". And Grainger's catalogue of works is a bit too chaotic for me to do any research I'm afraid.

Recordings & Broadcasts / New Chadwick from Dutton
Sunday 01 April 2012, 11:37
[I've moved this post to this thread, started by Edurban. Unfortunately, although it follows on naturally from Edurbans' post, it comes first here, because it was written earlier. I hope that's clear...  Mark]

Although it should have been in a separate thread, I've tried to look further into what compositions we can expect on a Chadwick disc. Mark mentioned the first Symphony which is a possibility. I've found no recordings of the following works (please feel free to make corrections!):

Overture The Miller's Daughter 1884
Pastoral Prelude 1891
Overture Adonais 1900
Symphonic poem Cleopatra 1905
Theme, Variations and Fugue 1908
Anniversary Overture 1922

There's also several works for chorus and orchestra.

And what is this work Lockhart mentioned, recorded in mono in 1959?

Recordings & Broadcasts / d'Erlanger from Dutton
Saturday 31 March 2012, 18:14
I've just read an article written by Martin Anderson for Fanfare Magazine where American conductor Keith Lockhart speaks about his recent Converse disc recorded by Dutton. In this context Lockhart mentioned the following:

"Johannes Wildner, our principal guest conductor, is doing his first disc for them; it's of works by Frederic d'Erlanger."

And Martin then added this comment:
Lewis Foreman has since informed me that "We are doing the Piano Concerto, the two pieces for cello and orchestra, and three orchestral pieces. Effectively it's the complete published orchestral works without the Violin Concerto, which is on Hyperion."

Jolly good!

This was interesting reading, so here's the article

This release have slipped under my radar for sure. It's been available at jpc for almost a month..
This is a followup to the Legends disc, and the contents are compositions for choir with or without orchestra.
There seems to be some substantial pieces here, among them Hymn of the Sea and the Festive March. The latter reminds me very much of similar festive music by Sibelius. One very positive thing is that on this disc there's no duplication of the repertoire recorded by Dutton last year.
