Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Marx Autumn Symphony in London

There have been only two performances of the Autumn Symphony after 1925:
Graz/Austria 2005 (Swierczewski) and New York 2008 (Botstein).

I have been in the performance and the idiom is simply "boring" (except the first tableau). But still - it's *very* romantic.

"Jeanne d'Arc" and "Verkündigung" (take the new recording with Schirmer/BR, not the old one with Davies/EMI) are true operas, not oratorios. I like especially "Verkündigung" (as compared with the other Braunfels operas) but still it is far behind "Die Vögel" and "Ulenspiegel".

An even greater work than the wonderful Te Deum is the "Große Messe" (Great Mass). Take the Decca recording with Honeck - the Capriccio recording with Weigle is not nearly as good. Concerning the operas: "Die Vögel" (probably his very best opus) and "Ulenspiegel" are two really enjoyable pieces.

I also like the piano concerto (Dutton) very well. And I hear rumors that Capriccio will soon release a recording of the "Carnival Overture" together with "Prelude and Fugue" for orchestra - I only know (and like very much) the latter piece, but the contemporary reviews about the "Carnival Overture" were full of praise. A very funny, lively and even dramatic work is the "Don Juan"-variations - Botstein's version (as amazon mp3) surpasses the others (Capriccio, Oehms) by far!

How can one be allergic to the voice of Pears? *shaking head*

Well, if there is a thread where the existence of a Steinberg VC recording is questioned, I find it natural to give the information here and not silently wait for people to look for other threads, which do not even mention Steinberg in their title. And it would be a little bit childish to expect people to read all threads, wouldn't it?

If there has not existed a recording yet, it now exists:

As Viennese I would say: Then buy a standing place. But I assume there are none in RFH ;)

Does anyone know if there is a chance to get a recording of this concert?

Composers & Music / Re: "Safe bets" in unsung repertory

As I understand this thread, we are talking not about complete newcomers to classical music (no need to recommend unsungs to them; there the correct suggestion would be simply Beethoven/Schubert/Schumann/Bruckner/Wagner/Mahler/Strauss - well a few French and Italian composers maybe, too) but for people who have made themselves familiar with the romantic standard repertoire and are now willing to wander in more obscure realms. And there Marx' Autums Symphony would be quite good start to find out what's going on "beyond". As mentioned earlier, of course, it depends on the personal taste of the person you talk to.

Joseph Marx: "Autumn Symphony". A hyperromantic, large, striking and ingenious work which will make a strong impression on anyone willing to spend some time on it.

Schreker has very many tunes, but it takes some time to get them into the head. With the early works of Braunfels (especially Ulenspiegel), it is faster and easier to catch them.

By the way: For the "Große Messe", perhaps his masterpiece after "Die Vögel" and even before "Ulenspiegel" take the Decca recording on 2 cd. It is much better than the new Capriccio recording.

The "chamber" orchestra is of 35 musicians, after all. So it does not at all sound like chamber music...

Recordings & Broadcasts / Braunfels Ulenspiegel DVD

Capriccio will release a DVD of Walter Braunfels' opera "Ulenspiegel" (from the performances in Linz/Austria in September 2014) in January 2017. Already now the DVD can be ordered by mail to office@entarteopera.com, they possibly sell it cheaper (22,- Euro - I do not know the regular prize) but charge shipping costs. I have bought it already: sound (stereo and surround) and vision are great, the performance was wonderful (I have seen it three times in Linz)! Subtitles in English and German are included.

There is also an old trailer somwhere at the homepage, but the sound of that one is not good, since the trailer is not taken from the DVD but was quickly and sloppily produced right after the performances.
