Recordings & Broadcasts / Emile Bernard
Sunday 06 June 2021, 03:29
New to me but his Divertissement on BIS label is very attractive:

Jean Émile Auguste Bernard (1843-1902) was a French Romantic composer and organist. His Divertissement for Doubled Wind Quintet, Op. 36 was first written for the Société des Instruments à Vent (Society of Wind Instruments) in Paris. First published by Durand around 1888, this melodic gem has been embraced in the woodwind chamber repertory. It is comprised of three movements: 1. Andante sostenuto - Allegro molto moderato, 2. Allegro vivace, and 3. Andante - Allegro non troppo.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Beethoven Rarity
Saturday 12 September 2020, 00:30
Tonight on Radio 4 Netherlands:

A special surprise is the world premiere of two completely unknown arias from Beethoven's opera torso Vestas Feuer (1803). Just like the concert, these are set in the context of René Seghers' 401DutchOperas handbook Part I. That should be published next year and will provide the definitive answer to the question whether or not Beethoven was born in Zutphen? In the context of that research, Seghers realized his own 401DutchOperas reconstruction of Vestas Feuer with the Alkmaar composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The premiere of the complete torso with orchestra should take place in June next year. In conclusion, highlights from the first Frisian opera, a long-lost work by Jean des Communes: 't Dorp in het bergte (c. 1812). In two hours you will hear how the completely unknown Dutch opera history undergoes enormous development between 1685 and 1812. The program is full of beautiful music in purely world premieres of own reconstructions, which took years to complete.

On WDR on Sunday evening:

Opera (starts at 1804/2: 04PM): joke, cunning and revenge
Singspiel in 4 acts by Philipp Christoph Kayser, text by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Finally premiered after more than 230 years: Christoph Philipp Kayser's turbulent stroke of genius based on a libretto by his friend Goethe. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Christoph Philipp Kayser have valued each other since Frankfurt youth days. Inspired by the lively example of Italian intermezzi, they looked for a new type of German opera. The result: "Joke, cunning and revenge", a turbulent three-person play about a young couple that an old, greedy doctor cheated of the inheritance. Kayser set Goethe's text to grandiose sound, with a great sense for melos and vocal virtuosity and with a wide range of original instrument colors. But then "Scherz, List und Rache" had to wait over 230 years for a premiere in full orchestra! In November 2019 the time had finally come, thanks to the joy of discovery by Werner Ehrhardt and his orchestra l'arte del mondo. The co-production of WDR 3 and Bayer Kultur can be seen on the radio for the first time.

Thanks to brilliant new technology, the opera can be seen on the radio for the first time!

Scapine: Annika Boos, soprano
Scapin: Cornel Frey, tenor
Doctor: Florian Götz, baritone
l'arte del mondo, directed by Werner Ehrhardt

Recording from the Bayer Erholungshaus, Leverkusen (1 hr., 56 min.)

Madama Butterfly as an operetta in Vietnam! Paul Abraham's musical love adventure of a French naval officer with a Jainah, the Vietnamese variant of a Japanese geisha, is a wild mix of Puccini, Puszta and Jazz. The "multicultural stew" was commissioned by the Viennese coffee king Julius Meinl II for his Japanese wife Michiko Tanaka. Almost 84 years to the day after its premiere in Vienna, the work is now experiencing its belated German premiere - a very special find in the series of excavations and rediscoveries at the Komische Oper Berlin. "The girl Lylo works as Jainah in the Sing Song House of the Sinister Dajak in Saigon. When it is supposed to be sold by its owner, who is as insensitive as it is greedy for money, the writer and naval officer Pierre Claudel readily agrees to marry Lylo. It's just stupid that in Paris his fiancée Yvonne is waiting for Pierre's timely return, because for inheritance reasons Yvonne must be married by a certain date. But mother-in-law Hortense Cliquot made provisions and appointed a deputy for the groom before Pierre left. Pierre is in no hurry to end his temporary marriage to Lylo and return to France. But a Madame Cliquot travels to Vietnam with daughter and entourage, if need be, in order to bring the unfaithful son-in-law to the season. "(Barry Kosky, director and chief director of the Komische Oper Berlin) (2

Just out on Spectacles de Versailles series and conducted by Herve Niquet: Martini's Requiem pour Louis XVI.

Written in 1811, it's a powerful work though a little dry for my tastes.
