Thanks A.S. for Mielck's Piano Concerto which I for one didn't even know existed. The Konzertstuck yes, but not the Concerto. It's obviously a student piece but the first two movements especially show so much promise. What a loss he was. New Grove says that the work is incomplete, so I wonder if this is a reconstruction? The finale has a rather truncated feel to it...
Hi,
however the work A.S uploaded is definitely the Konzertstück, Op. 9! Probably the station who broadcasted it made a misattribution.
Regards,
Holger
Oh!
Thank you for your correct message.
My computer's translation , Finnish 'Pianokonsert' to English 'Piano concerto'
In any case, I'm sorry that I made some mistakes these days...
I wish members will enjoy to listen my future uploads.
Regards,
A.S
I have the piano concerto back in Minnesota. Another upload to remind me of in October.
Jerry
Yes, definitely the Konzerstuck - I have the same performance broadcast by BBC Radio 3 in 2004. A shame. An upload of the actual Concerto would be great Jerfilm, when you get home. Thanks.
Many thanks for Pingoud's very colourful 1st Symphony. I can see why it caused a bit of a stir in Finland back then!
I've added a few more works to the Finnish Music collection.
Responding to the discussion of Melartin in the Composers forum, I've added a string trio by Melartin, along with a string quartet and a work for violin and piano by Viano Raitio.
Also Uuno Klami's Suomenlinna Overture [Sveaborg Fortress Overture] op. 30
It just keeps getting better and better ;D ;D
Since joining this site I have discovered SO much British music available for download that I NEVER dreamt I would ever hear... and now all three Pingoud symphonies :) :) These have been on my wish list of Finnish music for decades :)
The Finnish symphonies which have still not been recorded on cd or I have still not been able to find elsewhere and which I would be most keen to hear are:
Kalevi Aho: Symphony No.6
Aare Merikanto: Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 and 3
I would imagine that BIS will get round to the Aho 6th eventually but the Merikanto.........?
A.S. thank you sincerely for these symphonic works; all new to me. I had never even heard of Pingoud until now - a truly unsung composer - and getting to know his work is going to be a great pleasure.
Not directly related (maybe should go in the other forum, sorry) but assuming Aare can also be spelled Aarre (they could be different people even with the same name exactly of course as I well remember :) ), how is the Finlandia CD that contains two of his violin concertos (probably NLA except at libraries etc. at present, from 1991 (part of it released in 1987)? The conductors' names are promising at least.) (I see there's also an Ondine CD of his piano concertos from 1998...) (hrm. Google Books has a preview of a book (After Sibelius: studies in Finnish music edited by Tim Howell) with some interesting info about the Merikanto symphonies - sym. 1 opus 5 premiered?, with the piano concerto no.1 opus 3, in the first concert of Aarre Merikanto's works in 1914 in Helsinki, which was repeated; another concert, in 1917, in which symphony no.2 was premiered, "received a far less jubilant reception". Renamed his symphony no.3 Fantasia in 1923, not I think premiered until the 1950s soon before Merikanto's death I think I read somewhere else- not sure.
Wonderful, wonderful Finnish offerings, thank you so much, A.S., Amphissa, Latvian. And why do I just greedier for more and more.....
Step One: I am powerless (happily) over unsung music collecting, and my life has become (delightfully) unmanageable...
No disrespect meant.
Many thanks, A. S., for the uploads of Pingoud and Raitio!
Thank you, indeed! The Melartin is just gorgeous. Lohdutus is a beautiful little gem, and the melodies of Marionettes just flow effortlessly... I must go back and listen to the symphonies again.

Yes thx a lot, both Pingoud's third and the symphony of Raitio are new to me : do you have by chance A.Merikanto 2 and Karjalainen 3 ?
Hello Sicmu
I'm grad to hear you enjoy my uploads.
But sorry, I don't have A.Merikanto 2 and Karjalainen 3.
Who anyone have these?

Special thanks to Hannikainen' concerto.
This is fine , beautiful work!
I failed to record this broadcast and disappointed.
I'm happy to listen!
Thanks again! :D
A.S
the Hannikainen concerto has been recorded commercially but in other performances (I remember a review of it coupled with Sibelius piano pieces, Worldcat lists this possibly no longer available 1991 Finlandia CD. The Satukangas recording is a radio transcription disc only though. :) Thanks for it (and looking forward to the Ivanovs 21 when I get back and can upload it...)
What a treasure trove! Have just listened to Melartin's string Trio, a fine specimen of his clear-eyed, expansive, and quite personal voice. Like Sibelius's op. 56, it's not likely to be heard often in concert, so thank you, thank you, thank you.
A.S. - Ernest Pingoud, La face d'une grande ville (1936-37)...
There is rather more than expected in this download - unless Pingoud has attempted a blatant piece of plagiarism from my choice of "most over-rated composer"!
But the Pingoud is splendid! :)

The Pathetic Symphony is IMO one of the most beautiful symphonies ever written. Long before Mahler's ninth, Tchaikovsky tried ( and achieved) something really different fom the usual 4 mvt pattern. Not to mention that the most famous finnish composer was really under the influence of the russian master when he was writing his own first symphony.
Oh my goodness!!
The Aare Merikanto Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3 AND the Aho Symphony No.6 :) :) :)
Thank You so very much :) :)
Thanks a lot for the Merikanto Symphonies !
Both of Merikanto Symphonies, I feel very nice work!
Thanks a lot ;)
A.S
Agreed, and Pacius' symphony too- neat!
Yes, very many thanks for the Pacius Symphony.
Jerry, it IS the Concertstück in E minor op. 9 (1898). Moreover it's the same performance which is still aired occasionally... ;)
Sorry to have caused so much trouble but... well, you have so many rare piano concertos that I thought it were possible! :)
Gosh, we're both disappointed......
sorry.....darn......
Jerry
britishcomposer - a belated 'thank you' for the Hannikainen Piano Quartet - a thoroughly enjoyable work :) :)
Wiki says:
Hannikainen steered Finnish classical music from late Romanticism towards Impressionism. In addition to his piano miniatures, which best illustrated this development, he composed one opera, one piano concerto, one piano quartet, lieder, and film scores.
Hannikainen drowned during a sailing trip in Kuhmoinen in 1955. Some musical colleagues, like Aarre Merikanto, considered his death a suicide.
Jerfilm,
Unless I've missed it,, have you had a chance yet to locate the Mielck PC (not the Konzerstuck already uploaded).
Best wishesd
Richard
Richard i did upload the Concerto only to learn that it was the concertstucke so naturally I withdrew it. Sorry ~ I was disappointed too.....

Thank you, Atsushi, for the Fabritius VC! I had an old cassette tape and wanted to make a new recording but my internet connection broke down.
Here are the tempo indications of the three movements:
Ernst Fabritius
Violin concerto in D Minor Op. 7
1. Maestoso
2. Larghetto
3. Rondo: Vivace grazioso
Thanks for this BC.
britishcomposer, Thanks to post tempo indications of Fabritius.
I had never been known about this composer, but this is very good romantic style concerto, in my view!
Used Google translate and tweaked it to obtain this attempt at a brief English biography of Fabritius from his Finnish-Wikipedia bio. (A brief list of published works I can attempt to compile at another time...)
Ernst Fredrik Fabritius (July 2, 1842 - October 8, 1899) was a Finnish composer, violinist, and an estate-owner (minor nobleman?).
Fabritius studied at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1857 to 1861. He gave concerts all over Finland successfully, but suddenly stopped his violin-playing career in 1864. He worked as a civil servant in fiscal matters for awhile, but soon moved over to Agriculture. He continued to play and compose for a hobby.
Fabritius was also a journalist with some notable publications.
Perhaps of no interest, but I am uploading a recording of

Palmgren is certainly of interest- thank you.

Thanks to upload Palmgren's music.
I have Palmgren's Ballet music ' Cinderella ' and Piano concerto no.3 from radio broadcast recording.
I will upload these soon.
By the way, I listened Heino Kaski's symphony today.

I would love to have a go at this myself, but regretfully me score is under the Christmas tree and I am not allowed to touch it. Me lovely old mum agreed to pay my bill at the FMIC, the downside being I am not allowed to look at the scores until Christmas Day.

Cannot use m4a. :-[
depending on your platform, there are some good m4a to mp3 converters out there - this was discussed in another thread I think... I have a Mac and use Switch for some conversion, iTunes for some and "Max" for yet others.
There are lots of utilities out there which will convert between audio formats and this discussion here (http://www.unsungcomposers.com/forum/index.php/topic,1912.0.html) might be the place to start looking.
I request the Kalevi Aho Symphony No.15, Tapiola seconds my request and up it pops within hours ;D ;D
Can this get any better ??? ???
The words "Thank You" now seem such a feeble expression of gratitude ;D
The orchestra for the premiere of the Aho Symphony No.15 was actually the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (rather than the BBC Concert Orchestra as indicated on the Downloads section thread).
Thanks for the Radio concert upload, Atsushi. What an enjoyable programme. I've never heard of either Kuula or Schantz - does anybody have any more by either of these gentlemen?
QuoteThanks for the Radio concert upload, Atsushi. What an enjoyable programme. I've never heard of either Kuula or Schantz - does anybody have any more by either of these gentlemen?
Yes, I have a few works of Kuula's. I'll try to get them uploaded in the near future. Never heard of Schantz, though -- thanks, Atsushi!
Hi, I also heard name of Schantz first time.
But, this is very good romantic style music, in my view. :)
I do agree. There's a little flesh on the bones here (http://www.operas.com.ar/Music-Encyclopedia/74123/Schantz,-%28Johan%29-Filip-von.htm).
Toivo Kuula? I have his fragmentary "Jupiter" symphony conducted by Panula- have to check that that's a broadcast and not a commercial recording... the other things I have by him are probably from CDs. There's a couple of pages about him including this (http://www.elisanet.fi/kuula_seura/etkuula.html) one, also Wikipedia and others... ... wait. Since we're talking about Polish music and Kuula is Finnish, not Toivo Kuula. *goes to look what is being spoken of. Sorry! :) ...*
*blink* ok, unconfused... Polish, Finnish... and yes, same recording of the Jupiter symphony- I'll see if the other things I have (Ostrobothnian suite, his best-known work, and Sorrow from opus 2, also Orjan Poika- mostly from BBC broadcasts...) are from commercial CDs or no...
(Ok, I seem to have a different recording of Orjan Poika op.14 than the one on Alba, a longer one by a minute - 25.5 as opposed to 24 min. ... hrm. perhaps none of these recordings are, in fact...)
Thanks for the bio and work list, Eric. It's the same recording (Panula) of the Jupiter Symphony fragment which Atsushi has uploaded. Of course, I realised that I'd come across Kuula before, once I saw your mention of the South Ostrobothnian Suites.
Alba have released two CDs recently of major works by Toivo Kuula (100% Finnish) and another CD from Dutton Epoch. He was a challenger to Sibelius until shot in a political dispute in 1918. He was a fine Romantic nationalist composer. I have no idea why he is on the Polish page.
he is here, he's on the Finnish Downloads page or so I think I see which is correct.
Oops. my mistake. As you can see, I've moved these last few posts from the Polish thread to the Finnish one.

lescamil, I just sent you and email.
To whomever uploaded the Merikanto Symphony #1 (I think it was Shamokin88): I don't know if there's anything you can do about it, but it sounds like it was taped over something else that didn't completely disappear. In the quieter passages you can distinctly hear some sort of bleed from another work, or a different page from this one. It's particularly noticeable at the pianissimo passage at the end of the first movement. The symphony, BTW, appears to be in B minor.
Many, many thanks to Atsushi for making it possible to hear one of Vaino Raitio's expressionist works from the 1920s when he appears to have been influenced by composers like Scriabin :)
I agree your impression, Colin. Works by Raitio and Pingoud are always interesting for me :D
This is a somewhat limited view of Raitio. Up until 1918 he was quite the romantic. After 1930 he was similar to Uuno Klami, but more "nationalistic". For fuller picture hear the Symphony and the Ondine CD of shorter pieces. So, Swans and Moonlight etc. represent only 12 years, similar to A. Merikanto.

I believe it's his Op. 10. I don't even know IF it was published, although I doubt the performance downloaded here and on YouTube was from MS.
Helsinki University Library has only three things by him it seems? (two recordings, and a 1981 score of his piano trio)- Worldcat turns up a few more things (most published around 1920 or later, can't seem to find his piano concertos among them.)

Thanks. I just want to see the first page of the finale. I don't want to purchase the full score to do it, especially at the rate they charge, which I can't even calculate in $$. I emailed them requesting the information. It's a start, if they answer.
My thanks to Kari Laitinen at FIMIC for sending me a PDF of the first page of the finale of Linko's PC 2 in under 24 hours. For your information the movement is: Rondo alla Finlandese: Allegro giojoso e con burla. Apparently it is still in MS, as it was handwritten. I replied with gratitude and asked if they were looking for a publisher. Any suggestions if she should respond in the affirmative?
When there is so much music being made available for download on a daily basis and when at least this member tries to download just about everything, copy pieces and catalogue them all it is extremely hard to actually manage to listen to everything ;D
In these circumstances it is easy to overlook a work which turns out to be a real treasure of a discovery. The Erkki Salmenhaara Symphony No.4 is just such a piece :) A Finnish composer of whom I had never heard Salmenhaara turns out to have been a pupil of Kokkonen and Ligeti, an important figure in Finnish musical life and something of an authority on the history of Finnish music. The Fourth Symphony is rather a delicious mixture-Sibelius/Romanticism/Minimalism combined ;D
Many thanks to MVS for providing the music :) :)

A quite severe overstatement relative to my own experience. It's nice, I suppose, but nothing ever happens. All the movements are the same, and the music just non-chalantly and very temperately skips along without real contrast or argument, climax or exertion. In no wise troubling, anxious, or conflicted, - nor otherwise celebratory, visionary, or exalted. A drama of mid-life crisis and resolution (apropos the title of the Symphony) this isn't, but more an idyll of reflective contentment and peace. It might be I miss some elusive subtlety here, in the texture, the colors, and the flow, - but for me a rather hum-drum and soporifically-inflected encounter I'm afraid.

Thanks very much Mathias for the lovely performance of the fine String Quartet by Mielck. What a tragedy to music his early death was. For those who need movement headings, these are:
I. Allegro energico
II. Allegretto
III. Adagio cantabile
IV. Vivace
the parts (no score, maybe I should put that in my queue of stuff to do) of the Mielck can be found, too, at IMSLP (http://imslp.org/wiki/String_Quartet,_Op.1_(Mielck,_Ernst)). And thanks here too.
hrm. When my computer tries to decompress the Mielck quartet, it decides it needs to compress it yet further.... This has happened before...
I have just uploaded a new version. Perhaps too many letters in the file name?
Thanks! That's not -supposed- to cause a problem on my Mac (well, actually, there is a limit, but it's pretty reasonable ... I gather), but there might be a stricter limit with the decompression program I'm using (stuffit expander... I think I also tried one or two others last time something like this happened.)
Hrm, odd. When I try to have it run Stuffit Expander, I get "The structure of the archive is damaged (Error #17540)". Will look into that soon.
