I did a research all over this topic....nobody mentioned Catoire...I think his piano concerto op. 21 is a superrachmaninoffian piano concerto!!!

Can we think to Grieg's a minor piano concerto as a prequel of rachmaninov first PC (first version, think to the accords before the orchestral TUTTI at the end of the exposition....)...what about Rosza? Spellbound Piano Concerto?

About Mendelssohn -Moscheles piano & orchestra piece, I remember a set of variotions on a theme from Weber's Preciosa.
I remember a recording of it played by Paratore brothers.

Alfred Schnittke, Kurt Atterberg, Joseph Marx, Bohuslav Martinu, Peter Maxwell Davies. I think that Schnittke, Martinu and Davies are not unsung....in this case....i can replace in order with IKarol Szymanowski, ldebrando Pizzetti (Sinfonia in la and Concerto dell'Estate), Gianfrancesco Malipiero. I have heterogenous taste...

His Symphony No 2,recorded on the Marco Polo,is a late work & be warned,it is in a more astringent style. Personally,I don't like it,but someone else might!

I quite like the Second Symphony - and I think you're being perhaps a little harsh about the recording  :o

There is a whole swathe of French composers of this time who are not recognised properly, having been eclipsed by Debussy and Ravel:

Louis Aubert
André Caplet
Paul le Flem
Albéric Magnard
Albert Roussel (to an extent)
Charles Tournemire
Max d'Ollone

do you know Leòn Reinach?
He was a jewish french composer, died in Auschwitz in 1944. He left a sonata for violin and piano (Senart 1925)

I downloaded Schmitt's Quintet coupled with Hasards from iTunes store, good execution, pianist Christian Ivaldi.
I have also an excellent version of the Magnard violin sonata coupled with Franck Sonata (Dumay-Collard).
