Composers & Music / Re: Living Symphonists
Tuesday 01 May 2012, 20:18
One advantage of living in Huddersfield was that I was able to get along to the Arthur Butterworth premiere, in a well-attended concert at the Town Hall. Butterworth's 7th Symphony is in a single movement of about 20 minutes for normal orchestral forces, with the addition of a third trumpet. Sibelius' 7th is name-checked in the programme note, but this piece is loosely a rondo and based on a 3 note theme developed rhythmically and harmonically. There are some striking passages, notably in the slower section about two thirds into the symphony, with groups of woodwind/brass playing to a background of shimmering strings. A well-argued work, which I would enjoy hearing again.

The composer was at the performance and acknowledged the deserved acclaim. If I'm fortunate to live to my late 80s, it would be good to look as well as Arthur Butterworth .

The Semkow recording of Holmboe's 8th was my introduction to his music and in some aspects like the percussion playing, I still prefer his approach to the Arwel Hughes version. The BIS recording of no 8 also seems a bit muffled in comparison to some of the others in the cycle.

Henri Dutilleux's for me.

Composers & Music / Re: Unsung Viola Concertos
Thursday 16 February 2012, 02:56
The last century has seen quite a proliferation of Viola Concerti. Simon Bainbridge, Vytautas Barkauskas, Atli Heimir Sveinsson Konnun for viola and orchestra, Peter Paul Koprowski and a particular favourite, Tadeusz Baird's Concerto lugubre, all feature on cd.

Composers & Music / Re: Turkish Composers

Cengiz Tanc (1933-1997) was the first Turkish composer I heard, a broadcast of Improvisations for small orchestra. His Lyric Concerto is the title work on a Koch cd also featuring pieces by Erkin, Rey and Nevit Kodalli.

Eschiss1, you're right about Bashmakov, I also have the BIS cd featuring the flute works. However his output is relatively large, for example none of the 7 symphonies have been recorded.

Leonid Bashmakov's Flute Concerto Impressioni Marine is an attractive piece, on the same BIS cd as the Rautavaara Alberto mentions. Little else of Bashmakov's music seems to be recorded

A favourite Trumpet Concerto is Marcel Landowski's with orchestra and tape as recorded by Maurice Andre on Erato. This is a lyrical and atmospheric piece, with the electronic elements deployed subtly.
