Dente was also Stenhammar's composition teacher (source: http://stenhammarcompetition.se/wsimc/wilhelm-stenhammar/), and I can definitely hear in the slow movement what I would have said were "Stenhammarisms"... but now I'll call them "Dentesms"!

To honor his passing, I must mention Harold Shapero, whose 1947 Symphony for Classical Orchestra is a masterwork in my book.

Well, it was later that same century that Brahms apologized to Julius Roentgen for lifting a melody of his for Brahms's Second Symphony; I just was tickled at the thought of that being an echo of an earlier, very parallel, situation.  But "accusations" was mostly tongue-in-cheek. The Tune Police are purely fiction... aren't they? 

I was just listening to Eberl's E-flat piano concerto op.40.

Beethoven must have been familiar with it, no?  I'm thinking he may have (unconsciously?) borrowed from the opening of Eberl's middle movement for the finale of his own Emperor Concerto. Nothing extensive enough to merit accusations... but I keep wondering if Ludwig had decided Eberl let the germ of a good theme go to waste, and put it to better use.

Yes, I've been unable to expand it using any of several programs on my Mac. Could someone who successfully opened it please try reuploading it with a different compression?

I do think that's a nice piano quartet (although I think I'm hearing some jazz syncopations that mark it as clearly 20th century). Thank you for posting it!

I just wanted to make you aware of a contemporary composer who's very consciously writing music in a Haydn/Mozart vein, so unironically that I've actually described this music as a little frightening:

Latvian, I haven't read that, but have you or anyone else read the short story "The Receivers" by Alastair Reynolds? It's set in an alternate history in which the First World War has dragged on and on, and its main characters are two army audio technicians in the 1930s working at a "listening post", a primitive acoustic alternative to radar used to hear enemy aircraft, and discussing their composing days. They're Butterworth and Vaughan Williams. Google will locate which books the story's collected in, and let you read a few excerpts.

Thank you! I wonder what was wrong with the Search function? I looked for Coke before posting, and it found nothing -- but they're showing up now!   

In several of Rob Barnett's reviews on MusicWeb, he refers to the six Piano Concertos of "the British Rachmaninov scion, Reginald Sacheverell Coke (1912-1975)". 

Not only have I never heard of this person, but he seems to show up on Google only in Rob's reviews - talk about unknown! Does anyone know more about him and his music?

Eric, I've never had any problem converting WMAs to MP3s on my (relatively old - OS 10.4) Mac with the freeware version of Switch, available here: http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html

I know it barely counts as being a 20th-century Polish symphony, but let's not overlook the magnificent Symphony in E minor op.7 "The Revival" of Mieczysław Karlowicz. You can sample a few excerpts from it at http://www.allmusic.com/album/mieczyslaw-karlowicz-rebirth-symphony-op-7-bianca-da-molena-op-6-w266392/tracks (though the clip for the first movement is from the slow introduction, which doesn't give you an idea of how mighty it's about to get)
