Composers & Music / Vranicky recommendations
Thursday 11 November 2010, 01:38
This morning on my local classical station (WRR 101.1 FM) they played the piece below and I loved it. It was very Beethoven like and yet not. I was wondering if any of you have experience with composer and what recordings you would recommend?

QuoteVRANICKY: Aphrodite Symphony - 1.
Valek, Vladimir/Dvorak Chamber Orchestra
Supraphon: 72438

Composers & Music / Einojuhani Rautavaara?
Friday 28 August 2009, 20:50
I was reading through a copy of Listen magazine and saw an advertisement for the complete symphonies of Rautavaara. I was wondering if any members have experience with his music and is it worth purchasing? On the ONDINE website it seems they are also releasing a box set of his complete concertos this month. I've never heard a single piece for him and I'm hesitant to make a blind purchase without some recommendations.

Composers & Music / Classical Music Magazines
Saturday 06 June 2009, 04:59
Not sure where to put this as neither category seems to fit.

I was wondering is any of the members have subscriptions to any classical music magazines and what they think are the best? I have not subscribed to a magazine in years. I used to subscribe to Ovation Magazine in the 1980s but it went defunct long ago. I kind of wish it was still going as I really enjoy reading it. Perhaps because it was a little less technical and had good interviews and articles. I'm quite familiar with Gramophone and the BBC magazines but both are little pricey. Any off the beaten track type mags that anyone can recommend?

I was wondering what American composers the members enjoyed? I suppose almost everyone would name Aaron Copeland, Leonard Bernstein and Ferde Grofé, but how many would name George Chadwick, Howard Hanson, David Diamond? Or maybe there are some others that you think are worth a listen. Who would they be?
