Highly recommended is DaCapo's excellent disc of "Music Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales," with works by Finn Høffding, August Enna, C.E.F. Weyse, Poul Schierbeck, J.P.E. Hartmann, and Louis Glass.

Composers & Music / Re: Great orchestrators

Taken in the context of Vaughan Williams' letter to Gustav Holst (whence came the quote), he seems to be chiding Bridge as being a bit too precise, too proficient, too perfect ( ???)... IMHO, however, I generally find the orchestral works of Bridge to be perfectly sublime... Ah, The Sea:)

Also Grofe's Lincoln's Gettysburg Address... Anyone know if there's a recording of it?  ???

Well, if a thread were somehow ever to go off on a tangent, I'm sure someone would give us a sine...  ;D

If using Internet Explorer, try this:

To copy the URL of an image that appears on a page:

  1. Click on the desired picture with the right mouse button.
  2. Select Properties from the menu.
  3. Highlight the address appearing under Address (URL):.
  4. Press Ctrl-C to copy.

You would then paste that URL into the UC "Insert Image" tag, as previously explained.

I use MAC OSX... the comparable Windows option might be something slightly different, like "Copy Link Location"(?) or something like that...

1. To copy a photo off the Internet, right click on the picture, then left click on "Copy Image Location." A photo must have a "source address" to be posted, and it must be "hosted" on a web site in order to generate a source address, so... if I have a picture stored on my hard drive that I want to post, I find it easiest to simply e-mail it to myself. Once received, I view the image and right click on it, and then left click on "Copy Image Location."
2. To post the photo on the UC website, left click on the "Insert Image" icon. The HTML code will appear with the cursor automatically positioned between the start and end HTML codes.
3. Then use the "Paste" shortcut (Ctrl+C in Windows; Cmd+C for MAC) or menu command to "Paste" -- and the image location will be placed within the HTML code.
4. "Preview" your post to ensure it appears.

Hope that helps!  :)

Very limited info indeed on Dawson! A genealogical site yielded this:

Carl Alfred Dawson, born 19 Jan 1917, Indianapolis, Indiana; died 7 Jun 1994, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Might this be our man?  :-\

Otherwise I too see nothing online or in any American composer reference material that I've got.

Thanks for the Antheil catalogue! :)

Here's an interesting article on Antheil's Music to a World's Fair Film: 'Lost' Antheil Score Turns Up.

The John Vincent Symphony in D was uploaded yesterday by reiger. The exact same performance has been available here since 21 October 2011, when it was uploaded by shamokin88.

The whole point of compiling an Index of American Music Downloads was to avoid this sort of thing happening. I keep the index up to date on a daily basis.

Sorry... Please accept my sincere apology for the inadvertent duplication. I have deleted it. Below is the pic of the program notes for those interested...
