A premiere commercial recording of Freitas Branco's 2 Melodies for strings, op.5 (1909, premiered as a set in 2006), described as influenced by Edvard Grieg (lasting 10 minutes and described- and priced as?- a digital single) is due to be released next month by Naxos. Sounds potentially interesting.

Piano works from the younger years (before 1900) of Norwegian-American composer Signe Lund-Skabo (she lived from 1868-1950), on the second of a pair of two CDs (see https://www.unsungcomposers.com/forum/index.php/topic,8012.msg83966.html#msg83966), can be expected in November 2021 on the LAWO label.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Belgian piano trios
Friday 24 September 2021, 14:00
As yet unspecified? music for piano trio by Joseph Callaerts (1830-1901, familiar to me more as a composer for organ some of whose music is at IMSLP) and Joseph Ryelandt (1870-1965) was recorded by the Ryelandt Trio in April and will be released on Etcetera (album: "Late Romantic Piano Trios From Flanders") in late October (see Presto Classical.) The Ryelandt trio might be his B minor trio, Op.57, from 1915 that can be heard on YouTube...
(Oddly, Ryelandt has a published trio for violin, cello and piano Op.57, and according to Worldcat, several numbered trios for the same combination with later opus numbers in manuscript- Opp.75, 131- and the already recorded (on Toccata) Canon en trio Op.70. Op.57 was recorded by a different trio in 2014 on Phaedra.)

The 9-2019 Borgstrøm violin concerto broadcast mentioned here can be heard on "Through the Night" (e.g. the 26 July 2021 broadcast available until tomorrow morning, and I'm sure occasionally from time to time.) I know the work's been recorded (same violinist, different conductor and orchestra).

Recordings & Broadcasts / Walckiers String Quintets 2 & 4
Saturday 21 August 2021, 04:08
2 of Eugène Walckiers' (1793-1866) (apparently late) string quintets with double bass, no.2 (published 1862) Op.94 in C minor, and no.4 (published 1864) Op.108 in A major, are also receiving first recordings, to be released 10 September on Es-dur. His music looks interesting to me anyway and I'd like to hear this :)

After a couple of recordings of Friedrich Gernsheim's first and third piano quartets, the 2nd quartet (in C minor, Op.20) has now been recorded by the Mariani Quartet. This was released last month: Volume 1 of a predicted trilogy of Brahms and Gernsheim piano quartets.

Composers & Music / Further re Farrenc
Friday 21 May 2021, 05:13
didn't want to continue diverging at any Price Firenze or Florential, so wanted for one thing to note that yet -another- performance of Farrenc's 3rd symphony, a work I recall I never expected to hear at all (some years back...), was conducted by Graziella Contratto and the Bern Chamber Orchestra in 2018, and can be heard @ BBC Through the Night still (11 May 2021, 2:31 a.m., so for 20 days yet.- https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000vy43.)

(I would have resurrected the 2012 topic re Farrenc since this is meant to be as general, but 2012. Contratto's performance and a YouTube appearance- possibly pirate - of it are mentioned in an interesting article here :) , by the way, too, written by Alonso del Arte, who I believe is a member of this forum? Not sure?)

On Capriccio. I hope they intend to continue with works of his that have received only one (or no) recordings of his (the couplings here, 2 fantasies for clarinet & horn, may not have been recorded, actually, not sure.) See Naxos distribution (next month).

Not a major thing, but an upcoming Naxos recording has what may be the first recording of Reinecke's piano trio Op.38: Naxos 8.573969. Coupled with Beethoven op.56 arranged for piano trio by Reinecke. (The latter is of interest to me too, but then I've been listening to a number of arrangements over NML lately, especially the Beethoven/Liszt, Mozart/Hummel, etc., with an ear to how they work as music that sounds as though written for the "target" ensembles.)

Composers & Music / String concerto scores wish-list
Wednesday 07 April 2021, 15:23
Similar theme - string concerto (concerto for stringed instrument and orchestra (string, small or full)) wish-list for works with available digitized score and/or parts to aid in performance and/or realization, time period ca. 1840-1910 give or take, etc., commercially unrecorded, etc. ...

My suggestions to start with:

*Friedrich Hegar's cello concerto in C minor op.44 (actually probably composed 1919, but seems to be thoroughly Romantic. Full score available.)
*Fritz Kauffmann's cello concerto in G minor op.29 published 1899 (performed by Julius Klengel in 1902. Again, full score available).
*Hermann Zilcher's 2nd violin concerto in manuscript full score. (I don't think this has been recorded. IMSLP has the reduction.)

Recordings & Broadcasts / Farrenc Symphony 1: a reminder
Wednesday 31 March 2021, 15:47
Later today*, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic is live-streaming Louise Farrenc's 1st symphony: https://www.konserthuset.se/en/play/romantic-symphonies/
(Apparently on April 18 Temple University's orchestra is broacasting the 3rd symphony; and a search suggests this is a better year for her music than I'd suspected. Good.)

*i.e. Wednesday 31st March, from 31:30 (Alan Howe, moderator)

Additional note: the Farrenc starts around 31:43 into the video. Oh- sorry, I was reading 31:30 as ... I don't know- 36-hour time :(???

is this a reissue or the first commercial release of some recordings some of which may have had non-commercial release - this does look familiar...? The performers here are Grzegorz Novak and the Sinfonia Varsovia. The label is the Chopin Institute (whose website contains excellently detailed information about the composer's music, first publications, etc.)

Recordings & Broadcasts / La Tombelle String Quartet
Sunday 14 March 2021, 06:46
New recording (not the first ever, but possibly only the 2nd or 3rd) of the string quartet of Fernand de la Tombelle available soon (coupled with Ravel's- hopefully an incandescent performance, considering the competition) coming from the generally quite good Mandelring Quartet on the Audite label (US release date 9 April '21, according to Presto.)
