Darrel Hoffman has uploaded a midi realization of Borgstrøm's piano concerto in C, Op. 22 (1910), based on the two-piano score he found on IMSLP:  see <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzGVvoCsZB0&t=870s>

Perhaps someone can help him locate the full score which includes 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B♭), 2 bassoons + 4 horns, 2 trumpets (C), 3 trombones + timpani + strings.

Conductor Eugene Tzigane's website <https://eugenetzigane.com/performances> notes that the 3 Josef Labor Concert Pieces for Piano Left-Hand & Orchestra were recorded between 9-13 Jan. 2023.  Not sure which label will release this recording, but it's something to watch for.  Here are the details:

Labor, Josef (1842-1924) Austria
Concert Piece I in D (in the Form of Variations) for Piano Left-Hand and Orchestra (1915)
Concert Piece II in f for Piano Left-Hand and Orchestra (1916-17)
Concert Piece III in E-flat for Piano Left-Hand and Orchestra (1923)
Oliver Triendl/Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz/Eugene Tzigane (9-13 Jan. 2023)

In today's new release email from Hyperion, there's a thumbnail of a forthcoming CD of the two Tellefsen piano concertos played by Howard Shelley.  Also on that CD will be a work by Kalkbrenner, but I can't make out the title.  Perhaps someone else can figure it out.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Beethoven Double Concerto
Tuesday 28 March 2023, 22:15
Back in 2020, Derek Gleeson arranged Beethoven's Violin Concerto, Op. 61, and the composer's own arrangement for piano and orchestra, Op. 61a, as a double concerto.  A 7' excerpt has been on youtube since then, performed by Pavel Šporcl (vn), Svetlana Smolina (pf), and the Dublin PO under Gleeson.  It appears that the whole arrangement was recorded at the studios of Bulgarian National Radio, but I have not been able to track it down and inquiries to the performers have yielded no response.  Does anyone have this recording or another performance?  Maybe Toccata Classics or some other label could release what appears to be an interesting fusion of the composer's two versions of Op. 61.

Composers & Music / Kashperova Piano Concerto
Tuesday 07 June 2022, 16:36
Alexandra Dariescu and the BBC SO recorded the Kashperova Concerto in the studio on April 26, 2022, according to her twitter posting.  Hopefully it will air on BBC Radio 3 sometime.

Capriccio will soon reissue the old Balkanton recordings of Vladigerov's piano concertos 1-5.  Concertos 2 and 5 have never been out on CD, so this is great news.  AmazonUK gives a release date of 4 Sept. 2020 for this 2CD set, the cover of which can now be seen on soundcloud, where you can also hear the third movement of Concerto 3.

In case you missed my mention of this on the page discussing Busoni's Concerto, "Remus Platen" has posted on youtube 100+ recordings of rare, little heard piano-and orchestra-works, most from old German broadcasts, some played by their composers.  You can find these by searching for "Remus Platen" on youtube.  Check them out while they remain available.

Composers & Music / Hopekirk Concertstück
Monday 08 August 2016, 23:40
I know many were disappointed when Hyperion decided not to record the Helen Hopekirk Concertstück.  I have been in contact with Dr. Gary Steigerwalt, who performed the work on 17 April 2015 with the Mt. Holyoke SO conducted by Tian Hui Ng, and he has generously posted his performance on youtube so that others may be able to appreciate this long neglected composition.  Please spread the word.

Happy listening.

Does anyone know what happened with the "lost" Granados piano concerto that was in the news a few years ago after being rediscovered by pianist/conductor Melani Mestre in 2009?  According to the Spanish Wikipedia, it was performed by Mestre and the Lviv SO on 27 Oct. 2010, under Alexis Soriano, and was published by Editorial Boileau de Musica in the same year (see http://www.boileau-music.com/libro.asp?codart=B.3612&idioma=0 for Mestre's written comments about the work).  A recording was planned, but all that remains available are youtube clips of Mestre speaking about his discovery.  Were there any reviews of the première?  (It was supposed to be performed in both Lviv and Barcelona.)  Does anyone have a recording to post?  Thanks.

A new CD of both Stenhammar piano concertos is out on Naxos (8.572259).  Niklas Sivelöv is the pianist and he plays the works faster than anyone else.  The first concerto, for ex., is 5+ minutes less than on the Chandos recording, and even the shorter second concerto is several minutes less.  Some may like that, others not.  The orchestra is the Malmö SO conducted by Venzago.

Comparison of timings:
Concerto No. 1:  41:43 (Naxos), 45:50 (BIS), 45:53 (Hyperion), 47:18 (Chandos)
Concerto No. 2:  25:50 (Naxos), 28:43 (BIS), 29:21 (Hyperion)

As far as I can tell, there are no cuts, just faster performances, on the Naxos.  Btw, Amazon now has this available for mp3 download.

Composers & Music / piano concertos
Monday 15 February 2010, 14:25
Hello friends,

I have just registered on this forum and would like to introduce myself.  I maintain an online discography of works written for piano and orchestra at http://www.siue.edu/~aho/discography/Discography.pdf.  In addition, I am building a sound archive of these works that now includes some 10,000 different pieces recorded for commercial release, broadcast, or private use.  I would be happy to hear from anyone who knows of or has a recording of a piano-and-orchestra work that is not listed in my discography.

Besides my discography, I have been involved, behind the scenes, in several recordings--e.g., the original versions of Stenhammar's  Piano Concerto No. 1 and Grieg Piano Concerto, and Alkan's music for piano and orchestra.  I also have published books on Russian/Soviet composers and Shostakovich.

I look forward to hearing from other members, some of whom I already know (e.g., Tobias B., Martin A., Martin E.).

Thank you,
