Title: Hans Huber VC2 & Juon VC1
Post by: Alan Howe on Monday 16 October 2017, 20:55
News from the website of conductor Kevin Griffiths (son of Howard Griffiths):

In May 2016, Kevin Griffiths and the Violinist Maria Solozobova will record pieces by Swiss composers. Hans Huber's 2nd Violin concerto, which they already recorded last season and gave the first performance in the Tonhalle Zurich, will stand alongside his overture "Simplicius" and a Violin concerto by Paul Juon. Both concertos will be world premier recordings.

The recording will appear on Sony:

A performance of the Huber with the same artists is available for the time being in our Download board:

The Juon would presumably be either VC1 or VC3 as VC2 has already been recorded.

What splendid news! A very exciting release to look forward to.

In fact the coupling's Juon's VC2 - rather disappointing. A must-buy nevertheless. It's already available to download:

Update:

Although Amazon describes the Juon as VC2, Op.42 is in fact VC1 - so a world premiere indeed!

I didn't know there was a commercial recording of Juon's VC2. Is it still available?  And has Huber's 1st VC been recorded?

Here are details of the recording of VC2:

Unfortunately I don't know for sure whether the recording's still available - but I suspect it isn't.

Juon's VC1 is a very ripe piece indeed; it's also pretty expansive - at nearly 37 minutes it's virtually the length of the Brahms VC. I have been enjoying it very much and look forward to reading others' reactions...

Forgot to say thank you, Alan,  for providing the details of Juon's VC 2. Alas,  I cannot find it anywhere. But perhaps we can look forward to a new recording,  maybe with VC3, instead of with the other pieces on that CD which, somehow, I suspect I might not enjoy so much - though, of course, I could be wrong.

Can't find the CD anywhere online. Looks like it's download-only.
