Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Engel: Grete Minde

I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't expect a masterpiece but had to concede that Engel managed to handle the big forces quite assuredly. They told us Engel began work around 1914 and finished the opera in 1932. I wouldn't claim that he developed a distinct voice of his own but he definitely wrote in the language of his time. Wagner laid the foundations. The score is largely throughcomposed and Engel uses the vocal lines in an expressive manner. Harmonically he remains grounded in late romantic tonality but sometimes stresses the boundaries in a Straussian expressionistic way. But I also hear more folk-like, popular elements and simpler melodic lines, esp. in the last act. Perhaps more Humperdinck than Strauss here.
These are my first subjective impressions so dont judge me too harshly. ;)

Did any kind member record this broadcast?
https://oe1.orf.at/programm/20211123/657647/Die-Bruckner-Schuelerin-Mathilde-Kralik

The monthly radio magazine by Deutschlandfunk announces this for broadcast the coming thursday but the online calendar shows a different concert. First I thought the concert was cancelled because of corona but there are several reviews online.

Thank you, Tuomas!
I have tried different browsers and devices but it didn't start playing.
Perhaps the service is restricted so that only Finnish residents can use it?

Dear members,

I failed to record a quartet for brass instruments by Erkki Melartin which was broadcast yesterday by Yle Klassinen. However, I noticed little play buttons which suggested to me that Yle Klassinen provides a listen again service. Unfortunately I couldn't make it play. Would any kind member perhaps like to try and tell me if / how it works?

Here is the link to the program which contains the Melartin quartet:

I am sorry, I didn't manage to record this. Has any kind member been successful?

I have been waiting for a revival of Friedrich Theodor Fröhlich's Lieder since I first encountered five of them sung by Ernst Haefliger.
I couldn't imagine that a singer of acclaimed reputation would wish to study and perform them, though. Obviously Ian Bostridge thought high enough of them to present a complete song cycle to poems by Wilhelm Müller.
Swiss radio SRF2 will broadcast the concert in December:

Swiss radio SRF2 has broadcast the string quartet yesterday. They also praised the pioneering recording project of Adriano.

Thank you, Eric! I removed the post.

Lionel Harrison was so kind to write to Chineke! asking about the orchestration.
It happens that only the last movement has been orchestrated by Coleridge-Taylor himself.
I hope it is okay to post Lionel's message:
"I have had a charming reply from Chi-chi Nwanoku herself, telling me that the other movements were orchestrated by Chris Cameron (composer, arranger and producer) especially for the Chineke! Orchestra. Mr Cameron is, like SC-T, an alumnus of the Royal College of Music."

Dear members, to celebrate Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's birthday I have uploaded a recording of a BBC broadcast of last October.
It is a performance of the African Suite by the Chineke! Orchestra.
My googling wasn't successful so I cannot tell you, if SCT orchestrated the work himself. Perhaps some of you know better?
IMSLP has the score of the piano version only.
Enjoy!  :)

Composers & Music / Re: Atterberg Sinfonia piccola
Sunday 08 August 2021, 20:54
I would like to draw your attention to the following essay which explores the subject of Atterberg's revisions.

https://musikforskning.se/stm-sjm/sites/default/files/pdf/Finkel%20STM–SJM%202015.webb__0.pdf

The author mentions that only one recording of the revised version of No. 4 exists: Sten Frykberg conducted the Swedish Radioorkestern in a 1956 performance. In his later recordings of 1970 and 1976 he used the original 1918 version. We do not have a commercial recording of the revised version. So I would be very interested to know if any kind member may posses a copy of this 1956 radio recording?

ah, ok. As there is only one person on this forum whose personal "remit" extends well beyond (yr humble servant) no clarification was of course really required 🙂

No, Eric, count me in!

Romantic music sets my heart aflutter, but I am insatiable about music of all eras and I listen to almost every broadcast of contemporary music from the German, Swiss and Austrian radio stations and the BBC. Definitely a full schedule. (Otherwise I hadn't noticed a rare case of a contemporary composer being inspired by Raff!)

These are of course quite conservative 20th century composers but I very much welcome another piece by Hans Schaeuble, one of my favourite Swiss composers.

Sorry for the lengthy digression but I HAD to... ;)
