That Gould Trio are good! And the work at first listening suggests it is worth repeated listening. Anyone know the titles of the movements?

I don't think it is quite as easy as saying good music should be selected and played not on political grounds but on merit as some music has been ignored or judged bad in the past because of unconscious political bias. I don't give a fig for the colour, gender, class, or sexuality of a composer, but I am aware that some music is ignored or judged unfavourably because of the colour, gender, class, or sexuality of a composer.

I can recommend the Oxleys' recording of the complete flute quartets. There is little hint of that 'mass production' dips in quality that you sometimes get with some complete recordings of sets of compositions, the Oxleys are excellent musicians, and the music itself has more depth than most classical writing for flute quartet without bursting the bounds of the genre of entertainment music.

Thank you for posting this. I rather like it despite being a bit dubious about the mock-Tudor sound of some the first movement, and the finale which sounds like that of a suite rather than a symphony - but never mind! It is well written, engaging and has emotional depth in parts. I was surprised to find so few recordings by Milford, his music is surely commercial?

Very entertaining. Colourful melodies and orchestration. Piano part written to impress a concert hall audience. Is there a chord missing from the end?

Yes, thank you. I think I prefer this performance to the Czech Chamber PO version in which I think the woodwind sounds too prominent and tempos are bit inflexible.

Hensel - a name I recall despite having no interest in mathematics but lived at University with a household full of mathematicians.

The recordings of Fanny's music on this Web page is rather good. Especially the quartet which I hadn't heard before. I may have to look for a recording to purchase.

Have folk seen this website? I did a search to check and couldn't find it on here. It contains news of an interesting Larry Todd book on Fanny Mendelssohn and some recordings of her music.

I have the Marius Van Paassen recording of that - which is pianistically scintillating. Le Bal does not aspire to profundity but is witty and touching.

1. It was a joke at Beethoven's expense not Mayer's.
2. It satirises the pointlessness of the comparison to Beethoven - for the reasons explained above!
3. It contains an accidental 'a'.

A female Beethoven? Given the extant portraits I can't imagine that would be a pretty.

I think in the early years of the authentic instrument movement an exaggerated sound was often produced to make a point, and that divided opinion. Now I find the sound on recent authentic instrument recordings is often somewhat more conventional. From the samples the forte piano on this recording sounds tolerable. For the later sonatas they ought to use a big Broadwood from the 1830s, they are usually quite resonant. I would be interested to hear this recording in full.

I suspect the marketing department of recording companies think they are encouraging the public to buy a recording by comparing it to Beethoven, or Mozart, or any other great, yet it inevitably causes disappointment. Krommer, for example, is a poor Beethoven but good at being himself.
