Composers & Music / Corigliano: Music from the Edge
Wednesday 27 June 2012, 15:26
I mention this one because you might have missed it. It doesn't play out as a soundtrack but more like a tone poem. A very interesting one to listen to.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Eugene Zador
Saturday 05 May 2012, 16:53
Naxos has released a new CD offering 5 of his classical works. Eugene was primarily known for his work as an orchestrator for Miklos Rozsa films having worked with him for over 20 years. I'm in the  process of reviewing this release.

I just got a copy of this new Naxos release and I'm quite pleased at what I hear. The arrangements are by Alf Ardal and it is performed by the Oslo Camerata. While I do have the string quartets in my collection I've never heard them arranged like this before. I'm going to review this one for my site.

I wonder what the general opinion is of what recording to get?

Composers & Music / Albert Roussel Spider's Banquet
Saturday 28 January 2012, 17:14
Working on a review of this ballet/pantomine written in 1912. The recording I have is the Naxos 8.572243 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Stephane Deneve. Are there any other recordings of note? The beginning is certainly influenced by Debussy.

Composers & Music / Korngold Symphony in F-Sharp

What is the opinion of the Kempe recording of this work, the first commercial release I believe, in 1972 with the Munich Symphony? I have the Delos recording with the Oregon Symphony.

Composers & Music / The Gadfly/Shostakovich
Thursday 29 December 2011, 15:12
I'm working on an article about the suite composed for the 1955 film.

1... Was there anything close to an OST released?

2... Does anyone have the Naxos recording and what is their opinion?

3... Does anyone have the Capriccio recording?

I have the RCA/Serebrier, Chandos/Sinaisky, and an LP transfer of Melodiya/Khachaturian as recordings. Is there anything else to be considered?

Certainly an unsung work from Shostakovich this new 2 CD set from Naxos has previously un-recorded material.

http://sdtom.wordpress.com/2011/11/07/mosiacshoward-hanson/

This is a new reissue of a Hanson work that is definitely obscure. It was originally recorded by Delos (#3130). It is coupled with a very popular work of Hanson his 2nd Symphony. I'd not heard this one before.

Composers & Music / SINFONIETTA FOR STRINGS/HERRMANN

Talk about a neglected work. It took over 50 years before it was recorded and its main claim to fame was part of it was used in Psycho

Quite by accident I stumbled upon this most unusual Cello Concerto. Perry is truly unknown as far as American composers are concerned.

Recordings & Broadcasts / KARA KARAYEV Ballet Suites
Tuesday 16 August 2011, 15:28
Delos has released another CD from Russian Disc. This time it is some of his ballet suites again something I don't have any experience with. I did purchase the Naxos release 8.570720 of Don Quixote, Leyla and Mejnun, and his 3rd Symphony. http://sdtom.wordpress.com/2009/01/13/orchestral-workskara-karayev/ You can tell how heavily influenced he was by Shostakovich. Need to listen to this release several more times.

Written when he was but 18 in one week this work certainly qualifies as a unsung one.

Composers & Music / Fatum

While we can hardly call Tchaikovsky unsung I can make a case for this work which was published posth. in 1896 being reconstructed by R.R. Shoring who I know nothing about. I also know nothing about the Grand Symphony Orchestra that Gauk conducted. Compare it with the Detroit Symphony and you almost have two different works! I've included the first minute of both recordings.

Some of you might be interested in this release which has now grown to five volumes with more on the way. While Shostakovich is certainly not unsung some of these films certainly are.

Does anyone have a favorite recording? I like the Markevitch although the analog doesn't stand up to the newer digital recordings.

This is a real treasure to have if you enjoy his film music. Rozsa was one composer who enjoyed success in concert as well as soundtrack material.

I just picked up this 10 CD set from Berkshire. Does anyone else have it? It is mono with limited dynamic range but so far they seem to be clean recordings.
