At the time of his death, Oliver was in the process of trying to find premises for his proposed museum.  He had saved many original scores as well as music dumped by music publishers and colleges. He had also just acquired the earliest known portrait of Charles Groves. I miss him greatly as he had an encyclopedic knowledge of classical music and performance.  Any query about anything musical usually led to anecdotes about many well known names, some very amusing and not for publication. He had a talent for making some very ordinary, even banal music sound worthwhile. He had recently started organizing and performing in a series of concerts in the Grand Salon at Drury Lane theatre, sadly interrupted by the Covid crisis.

You may know of Chris Fifield's book on German Symphonies between Beethoven and Brahms, What fun it would be to do a similar one on English symphonies.

Nicolai Tcherepnin was chosen by Diaghilev to conduct the first season of his Ballet Russe in Paris. It could be argued that if he or his ballet had flopped there might not have been a Ballet Russe for further seasons and Diaghilev may not have gone on to commission works by Stravinsky, Satie, Prokofiev, Ravel, Debussy and Richard Strauss,

Heinrich Reuss XXlV  Prince of Reuss-Kostritz, Austria 8.12.1855- 2.10.1910

I first came across HR in Cobbett's, where his chamber music was well reviewed. There is a rare viola sonata in which the Cobbett's  reviewer says 'The distinctive tone of the stringed instrument is fully recognised and at no time is the piano permitted to overpower it. The first movement is idyllic ---.'
HR's earliest music training was with his father1 .He subsequently had  lessons with Heinrich von Herzogenberg and Wilhelm Rust.
The musical style of Heinrich XXIV was strongly influenced by Brahms, though it tends to be lighter in tone, and thus resembles more the style of Heinrich von Herzogenberg. Heinrich XXIV's chamber music compositions display a masterful command of musical form and technique.
During his lifetime, the compositions of Heinrich XXIV enjoyed favourable comment and regular performance.
Are there any reviews of the symphonies ? If they are as good as the chamber music they deserve exploration.

I too can think of many composers who died within living memory and it is a mercy that there are no recordings. It is up to other members of the Forum to suggest some who might be worth recording.
