Composers & Music / Classifying Classical Music
Thursday 11 February 2016, 11:28
Folks,

Further to the 'other' thread about storage and backups, I've decided to initiate a long-term 'rip and save' of my CDs to my PC with removable back-up - all the other options, on reflection, need too much planning or documenting or technical awareness or money.

However, before I start in  earnest, I want to have a set of standard PC folders, per composer (only using the ones required per composer) that reflect the various genres of music (e.g. symphony, concerto).  Effectively, I consider my collection of CDs to be in the sequence composer/genre/work/track, although I use my cross-reference index to keep track of works for example, under a CD of another composer.

So, if that is a reasonable view, I want to organise my rips/back-up along those lines.  As it corresponds to how I've indexed my music, it also allows, if necessary, a check that the folder(s) contain what the index says they should!

In consequence , my thoughts at suggesting a set of folders that would encompass all classical music types I'm aware of are below.  If the greater experience of  UC members can suggest either omissions or a better approach, I would love to hear before I start.

My suggested set of folders is (unfortunately the indentation was lost when I copied it!):

Categories of Music
1   with voice(s)
•   unaccompanied
o   secular
o   sacred
•   with orchestra
o   stage works (opera & musicals)
o   melodrama (i.e. spoken)
o   choral
o   soloist
•   with other accompaniment
o   lieder
o   other
2   Orchestral (excl. 1 above)
•   ballet
•   featured soloist(s)
o   concertos
o   concert pieces
o   concertante works and similar
•   other multi-movement works
o   symphonies
o   suites
o   film scores
•   single movement works
o   overtures
o   preludes
o   tone poems etc.
3   Chamber Works (3 or more instruments)
•   Trios
•   Quartets
•   etc. to
•   Nonet
4   Instrumental (1 or 2 instruments)
•   Solo instrument (e.g. piano sonata)
•   Two instruments (e.g. cello sonata)
5   Other Ensembles (excl. 3 above)
•   Band
o   wind
o   brass
•   Other (if /as required)

Sorry if this is a bit of a long post!

Best wishes

Richard

Folks,

If this duplicates previous posts or is in the wrong place, my apologies - I'm sure the moderators will delete or shift as appropriate.  I've seen a few individual posts on this, but not a thread as such.

Having heard Ryeland's 5th symphony last year (was it on e-music or YT? - can't remember), I've recently downloaded (from e-music) his fourth and I've thoroughly enjoyed them both.

I'm aware he wrote other symphonies  and also a mass but is there any other orchestral music?  Has anyone heard any of his other orchestral works (mass, symphonies 1-3 and any others if there are any) and if so what impression did they give in terms of 'romantic' appeal.

Also does anyone knows of their availability to download or purchase??  I understand his mass and other symphonies have been recorded in the past (the mass I know I can get from e-music or BIS) but the early symphonies and anything else seem a bit elusive

Cheers

Recordings & Broadcasts / Eggert Symphonies
Thursday 05 February 2015, 10:52
I've just come across an old reference to NAXOS releasing a CD of the Eggert symphonies 1 & 4, with a further CD or nos 2 & 3 maybe to follow.  This was dated as 2009 on NAXOS' own website but now seems to have sunk without trace.

Does anyone have any info on what happened to this/these symphonies & CD(s).

Cheers

Recordings & Broadcasts / Lachner 'Nonet' problem
Sunday 21 April 2013, 18:43
Have downloaded OK but then having trouble playing this.  It seems to be a 'protected' wma file that (i) won't play 'as is' and (ii) can't be converted to mp3.  I have a standard 'Windows 'Vista' system.

Any suggestions anyone?

Cheers

Richard.

Composers & Music / Unfaithful to the Score?
Tuesday 12 March 2013, 09:56
I wonder what members views are concerning performances that are not 'true' to the composer's score.  From the few times I've heard different versions of the same music, I  know there can be quite a variance and I know senior members of this forum have previously compared different performances - for example noting one conductor may have chopped a significant section compared to another or significantly changed the tempi of some parts.

What I'm NOT aware of is ever finding any comment in the CD (or LP!) notes from the conductor that 'I've speeded it up' or 'added xyz players' or 'discarded certain bars' etc. that represent measurable changes to what the composer wrote, as opposed to reasonable variations in emphasis but still based on the original score.

I don't have a problem with such performances 'per se' - if they please the ear, surely that is the main thing; however, if they are based on changes to the composer's score, the honest thing would be to let us know what (and why).

Any views, anyone?

Composers & Music / The Story of Moses
Monday 04 March 2013, 18:58
Is anyone aware of any 'romantic' orchestral works (opera, symphonic poem, suite or other) depicting the story of Moses?

(If I'm missing the obvious, excuse my ignorance, otherwise I'm most interested in what there might be!

Best wishes

Recordings & Broadcasts / Schumann G min Scherzo
Friday 22 February 2013, 10:03
Is this the 'Zwickau' work or, as you suggest, part of the 'lost' C min Symphony.  Will dig out the former for a comparative listen.  If it is the latter, does anyone have any further information on this?

Many tks for the upload and a chance to listen

Best wishes

A quick look at the Cameo classics web-site has now revealed that the 'missing' Vol 4 of German-Jewish composers is in fact a re-issue of previous material - Jadassohn Sym 1 & PC; Pabst PC.  (Presumably this is for their internal technical reasons).

Downloads Discussion Archive / Downloads Section
Monday 13 June 2011, 21:30
Soon after I was introduced to the delights of this web-site, I came across downloads of (or links to) most enjoyable works by Bortkiewicz (VC & CC) and Castro (PC).

In setting up the 'downloads' section, is it possible to gather up all the (legit) downloads/links that may be lurking elsewhere in the various discussion threads.  As a 'new boy' I don't know of any others but I'm sure the 'senior' members will be well aware of what has gone before.

These downloads are such an enjoyable source of new material it would be a shame for earlier stuff to remain unseen (or should that be unheard!) because we don;t know its even there.

Here's hoping!

Being new to this site (and only very amateur but very much an enthusiast in this area), this might well be old hat to long-established members so apologies if it is.

I came across the following web-site which might be of interest:
