I'll pitch for William Wallace: a classy composer who carries his melodies with panache.  I especially like Eumenides on Hyperion CDA66987.

Composers & Music / Malcolm Arnold
Thursday 07 July 2011, 21:16
Confession: I've come very late to Arnold.

Impression: Highly favourable! Well, from the Groves CD - not so much the 2nd but certainly 5th symphony and Peterloo.

BBC may have called him "a towering figure in the history of British music" but he still seems badly neglected. Where do you think he ranks among British 20th century composers? What other gems do you rate? What do you think of his film music?

Composers & Music / Desert Island Unsungs
Thursday 30 June 2011, 19:53
Occasionally, members say a CD would be in their desert island collection.  Whilst of course this isn't about pirate copies, it's still only pieces of eight!  What is your full list of the eight you would take?

Composers & Music / Unsung History
Tuesday 28 June 2011, 19:20
What is there in the unsung music collection that is written on the great events in history - and is there anything on American Independence (declaration or war)? Also especially interested in: Hannibal crossing the Alps; Alfred the Great; Battle of Hastings; Lady Jane Grey; Drake/Armada; Any scientists or writers; Declaration of Human Rights. Hope this isn't crazy!

Recordings & Broadcasts / Topping Unsung
Tuesday 28 June 2011, 19:02
Imagine you're in a CD store that really does sell everything without even having to order it (!!) when someone comes up you and says:

"I have just enough to buy 2 CDs, which don't have to be recently issued but do have to be symphonic or choral. And I want one that's unsung by an unsung composer and another that's unsung by a well-known composer. What are your top 2 recommendations fitting the bill, including why you think these are such great works and performances?"

So, what would you say?

Composers & Music / Great Unsung Third Symphonies
Tuesday 25 August 2009, 20:40
I'm starting an offbeat project of listening to Third Symphonies as a programmed series over several days/weeks. Twenty suggestions have come in from Mahler-List members but I don't want to miss other good third symphonies which are less well known. Can you suggest any, and if possible, for a bonus point, supply the CD label/number, along with any comment about why you like it?
