Composers & Music / Ignaz Moscheles 1794-1870
Sunday 01 March 2020, 13:31
Ignaz Moscheles Born Prague 23.5.1794  Died Leipzig  10.3.1870
I understand the date on Ignaz's birth certificate is 23.5.1794 and not as frequently erroneously quoted

This month is the 150th anniversary of the death of Ignaz Moscheles.

He initially studied music at the Prague conservatory under Dionys Weber.

After the death of his father in 1805 Moscheles settled in Vienna ,  where he studied counterpoint under Johann Albrechtsberger and composition with Antonio Salieri.  It was in Vienna that he became friends with Meyerbeer and they played duets together.
From 1821 he traveled widely including  Paris, Amsterdam and London. In 1824 in Berlin he taught Mendelssohn, forming a lasting friendship which lasted until the latter's death.
He married Charlotte Embden in Hamburg in 1825 and two months later settled in London where he remained teaching , composing and performing  until 1846. He was appointed a Director of The Philharmonic Society in 1832.

Following his appointment as Professor of Piano by Mendelssohn,  he went to Leipzig where he remained for the rest of his life.
He translated 'The Life of Beethoven ' into English n 1841.

As a pianist he believed that the pedals should be used sparingly, quite the opposite to Beethoven.
In 1871 his wife wrote 'The Life of Moscheles' which included selections from his correspondence and diaries.  It is a very entertaining work.

Composers & Music / Thomas Molleson Mudie 1809-1876
Monday 11 November 2019, 10:06
Thomas Molleson Mudie  Born 30.11.1809 in Chelsea, London  Died 24.7.1876 London

Mudie was the son of Scottish parents. In 1823 he was one of ten successful candidates for entry in the first examination for entry to the Royal Academy Of music in London. He studied under William Crotch and Cipriani Potter. He also studied clarinet under Thomas Willman.  Having completed his studies he was appointed a professor of piano at the RAM. In 1844 he went to Edinburgh as a teacher, he also gave a number of piano recitals while there.  He returned to London in 1863, where he remained for the rest of his life.

According to Grove all his music was deposited at The RAM, however they seem to have lost a worrying amount of it. If readers can fill in the gaps it would be helpful. On a personal note; I have found the Library at the RAM to be the most unhelpful in the UK for bona fide researchers.

Composers & Music / Stanley Hawley 1867-1916
Saturday 26 October 2019, 11:27
Stanley Harry Hawley  Born Ilkeston, Derbyshire  17.5.1867  Died Ilkeston  13.6.1916

Stanley was the youngest of four children1. He remained unmarried. He received most of his musical training at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He became a composer, pianist and organist and held a number of administrative posts including Hon. Secretary of the Royal Philharmonic Society.  Perhaps the least fashionable genre of classical music during the last hundred years are melodramas and recitations with musical accompaniment.  Hawley was quite prolific in composing these and was clearly successful. Some of the compositions were orchestrated as well as being for solo piano. Given a good actor, many of these are worth reviving as part of a chamber concert.  There are recordings of some of his works.

Composers & Music / Frederick John Nettlefold 1867-1949
Monday 07 October 2019, 10:30
Frederick John Nettlefold  Born Hastings, Sussex 1.10.1867  Died 25.4.1949

On a recent visit to a member of this forum I was shown box sets of recordings of works by Nettlefold. These were 78's on the HMV label. Never having heard of him I 'googled' the following information: He was a wealthy industrialist, principally in the manufacture of glass bottles.  He was a great patron of the arts, had a fine collection of paintings, bronzes and Martinware. He left a substantial collection of paintings to Tate Britain. He was involved in the theatre and was an amateur composer.  He was married to Vera de Villiers and following her affair with the conductor/composer Albert Coates, he terminated his patronage with a London based symphony orchestra.  It also had a lasting affect on Coates career, he never had a permanent conducting post.

The compositions which I have managed to trace are;

"Il Pensoroso"  for soprano, organ and orchestra
Dramatic song "Edward, Edward"  for tenor and orchestra
Suite for strings
Piano Trio in A major
Trio in D major for flute, cello and piano
"May Night" song for flute, cello and piano
"Youth of year"  song with piano accompaniment
Three pieces for cello and piano: 1. Romance, 2. Barcarolle, 3. Old English Dance  pub. by Weekes
Three pieces for cello and piano: 1. Minuet, 2. Nocturne, 3. Tarantella  pub. by Weekes
"The Midnight Hour" concert waltz for piano and orchestra
"Olivia" concert waltz for piano and orchestra
"In Memoriam"  solo piano

Arseny Nikolayevich Koreshchenko  Born Moscow 18 December 1870 –  Died Khakiv 6 January 1921

From the age of three he began playing the piano and was soon after making up his own compositions.  At eight he played before Anton Rubenstein who, very impressed, suggested he study more formally. He studied piano with Nikolas Zverev and composition and theory with Anton Arensky. He started at the Moscow Conservatory in 1884 and graduated in 1891.  His principal teachers being Sergei Taneyev and Anton Arensky.
