Carl/Karl Anton Florian Eckert  Born Potsdam  7.12.1820  Died  Berlin 14.10.1879

Eckert was orphaned at an early age.  The poet E. Forster spotted his potential and paid for his study under Richenberg, Greulich, and later for violin with Botticher and H. All the lectures are live streamed on YouTube.  dates are 24.9.2019,  21.1.2020 followed by a further four. The lectures are given by Marina Frolova-Walker.

Although Lizst is a 'sung' composer, this piece is not.  It was composed to celebrate Schiller's 100 birthday. It is a theatrical melodrama featuring actors interacting with the incidental music .  This first UK performance will take place at Cadogan Hall, London on 4th October.   Actors include Jema Redgrave and Sara Kestelman with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Also included in the concert are Hummel's Freudenfest Overture and Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier Suite.  The evening is introduced by the musicologist Gerard McBurney.

Early piano concertos by Maurice Ravel;  In 1906 Ravel had the idea for a piano concerto Zazpiac-Bat to be based on Basque themes.  In1916 he had a further idea for a concerto for either piano or cello based on the novel Le grand Meaulnes.

Is it known how far he progressed with either of these projects?

Thursday 20 June 2019, 09:59
Louisa Emma Lomax  Born Brighton  22.6.1873  Died Brighton  29.8.1963

Her initial music studies were at The Brighton School of Music.  From there she went on to study at The Royal Academy in London principally under Frederick Corder.  Corder described her and Morfydd Owen as his most distinguished women composers.
At some time before 1914 she appears to have given up a promising career in composition to become a music teacher in Brighton, where she remained for the rest of her life.  Early on she seems to have discarded her first name of Louisa. There was some solo piano music which appears lost.  She resided at Park Crescent, Brighton for most of her life and left an estate valued at £4.348. *

Louis James Alfred Lefebure-Wely Born Paris  13.11.1817  Died Paris  31.12.1869

He was the son of Isaac Lefebure* an organist and minor composer.  From the age of eight he was deputising for his father at the Paris church of Saint-Roch, where on the death of his father he was appointed principal organist.  He was only fifteen at the time. A year later in 1832 he entered The Paris Conservatoire, taking lessons from Jaques Halevy, Henri Berton and organ with Francois Benoist and Sejank.  In 1835 he won the premier prix for piano and organ. He also took the opportunity to study privatly with Adolph Adam.  During this time he continued at Saint-Roch until 1847 and was then appointed organist at La Madeleine, where a year earlier Aristide Cavaille-Coll had completed his first large symphonic organ. This led to a life long friendship between the two,  though they had first met in 1836.   He remained at La Madelein until 1858 and from 1863 until his death was organist at Saint-Suplice. In his day he was generally recognised as one of the great virtuoso organists, he certainly filled the churches where he performed.

Early in his career he added Wely to his surname. In order to support his wife and growing family he composed a substantial amount of music for piano solo.  It was only later in life that he really composed a substantial amount for organ.

Personal note: I first heard  a piece of his music on Radio 3, 50 years ago. Until that point I had found solo organ music too 'arch' and dry.  L-W made organ music sound fun and full of life, one wanted to almost dance to it. He is now considered rather vulgar and most organists turn their noses up at his music.  This may be a reason for the fact that organ music only appeals to a tiny minority, it is all too precious.  Try one of his Sorties.

Composers & Music / British Operas from 1952
Monday 18 March 2019, 12:54
In 2012, the Late Stan Mears published in the British Music Society Journal a brief review of British Operas composed during the reign of Elizabeth 11.  There were 147 mentioned.  I could have added a few more. My question to the members of this forum is: are any British operas composed during this period the kind that can be recommended to this forum ?  The only possibility that I could spot was Wilfred Joseph's Rebecca from 1983.

Needless to say most of them have disappeared without trace.

I see that Naxos have recently released a recording Alfred Cellier's  operetta, Dorothy, conducted by Richard Bonynge. Has anyone had a chance to listen to it ?
