Title: Jenö Hubay – Anna Karenina at Stadttheater Bern, 26 November 2017
Post by: Wheesht on Sunday 07 May 2017, 11:12
Konzert Theater Bern have just published their programme for the 2017/18 season, and that includes Jenö Hubay's opera Anna Karenina – apparently never performed in Switzerland before (premiere on 26 November), conducted by Jochem Hochstenbach and directed by Adriana Altaras. No indication yet as to a possible broadcast or even a recording.

Having looked at the vocal score about 15 years ago a few times (and made photocopies of a few numbers and then looked at it again- now the whole thing's uploaded to IMSLP) I've hoped to hear it, so what -can- I say but "hope so"? :)

There's an excerpt on YouTube from the production at Braunschweig in 2014:

Sounds magnificent!

This opera sounds like a total winner. Hubay's 3rd Violin Concerto was my introduction to his composing, and it's a magnificent piece.

I've never found Hubay a totally convincing composer, but I must admit that the brief excerpts on YouTube are pretty mouthwatering.
