Recordings & Broadcasts / Florence Price Piano Concerto
Saturday 15 October 2022, 10:13
There was back in April a release of the newly discovered original orchestration of her Piano Concerto. Previous live performances used a reconstruction of the orchestration.

The Piano Concerto will possibly also be recorded by Naxos. Perhaps it's even a candidate for Hyperion's  Romantic Piano Concerto series?  ;)

Composers & Music / Viktor Ullmann: Piano Concerto
Saturday 26 September 2020, 12:24
The Piano Concerto from 1939 by Ullmann (who was killed in 1944) is a short work, dense and impressive. There was a recording from the mid-90s with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. It has been recorded three more times over the past few years. The last one was released this year. So perhaps the work is no longer "unsung" and is now part of the repertoire?

I like the recording by Herbert Schuch with the WDR Sinfonieorchester conducted by Olari Elts.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Comedy Overtures on Naxos
Sunday 20 September 2020, 17:09
Naxos did two collections of "Comedy Overtures"

Great Comedy Overtures (Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Friedel)
https://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.573418

and recently
Opéra-Comique Overtures (Vienna Radio Symphony, M. Halász)
https://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.574122

The first one conducted by Lance Friedel is a great collection of delightful pieces in spirited performances. It's full of sung and unsung favorites. The second one is mostly a collection of somewhat more bland pieces but the performances are very good though. The one real discovery for me is the "Le calife de Bagdad" Overture by Boieldieu with its faux Mozart-Janitscharenmusik.  :)

Recordings & Broadcasts / Russian Five
Saturday 01 August 2020, 11:01
In the 90s the RCA Red Seal label started a series with recordings of the "Russian 5" conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov. In terms of unsung compositions the most interesting CD was the Mussorgsky album. I think only Borodin, Rimsky-Korssakov and Mussorgsky were released back then and the series stopped. Is it kown if albums with music by Balakirev and Cui were planned? These two composers could be seen in the logo on the CD covers. A Cui release could have been very interesting. I suppose Svetlanov never recorded music by him.

Composers & Music / Arensky Valse
Tuesday 21 July 2020, 14:34
Anton Arensky's Valse from the Suite for Two Pianos Op. 15. was used in an orchestral transcription for the 1956 Ingrid Bergman production "Anastasia". I wonder about the trio segment which is not part of Arensky's piece. That section has a beautiful "Fin de siècle"-feeling and can be heard here from 1:19 - 2:35

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQrkW_DBZfk

Was that middle segment perhaps taken from another composition by Arensky? The russian composer Michel Michelet worked as an arranger for "Anastasia". Perhaps he composed it in Arensky's style?

Recordings & Broadcasts / Borodin Mlada Finale
Wednesday 15 July 2020, 15:55
I know Borodin is not unsung but this piece perhaps.  Rimsky-Korsakov orchestrated Borodin's sketches for the Finale of the Ballet Opera Mlada. I remember a broadcast of this rare composition over 20 years ago by the NDR Sinfonieorchester.

The Mlada Finale was once available on LP but was it ever released on CD?
