Composers & Music / Felix vom Rath (1866 - 1905)
Saturday 05 September 2015, 19:07
Does anyone know anything about the composer Felix vom Rath. Other than a vague reference to his Piano Concerto, Op. 6 in the booklet accompanying the Atterberg Piano Concerto Cd from CPO, I can't seem to find anything except that he favored the Liszt "school". Any idea about his music.

Composers & Music / Medtner reevaluation
Sunday 28 June 2015, 10:04
I am sure that Medtner needs no introduction here. His works seem to be coming up on the concert platform with the 2nd concerto performed in 2014 to a tremendous success by Demidenko. http://www.limelightmagazine.com.au/live-reviews/review-russian-extravaganza-queensland-symphony
The 3rd concerto was played by Yakov Kasman on May 20th this year https://www.uab.edu/news/faculty/item/6066-kasman-to-perform-medtner-s-piano-concerto-no-3-with-ukranian-national-symphony-orchestra

It's so nice to hear this unjustly neglected composer getting his dues.

I just found this interesting Lecture / Recital on youtube on Medtner's work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKHfk7GT-Sw

Hopefully his unexplored songs will be taken up by singers soon....

Just came across this name on the net - Jean Émile Auguste Bernard. He seems to have composed a G minor Violin Concerto premired by Sarasate... Anyone familiar with this composer. Wiki lists a few interesting works including a Concertstück for Piano and Orchestra.

Composers & Music / Beryl Rubinstein

I'm not familiar with this composer except the charming Flute sonata. He apparently wrote 2 piano concertos of with the one in C is called "..One of the strongest American concertos" by Maurice Hinson in "Music for Piano and Orchestra: An Annotated Guide". Quite an interesting description. Anyone familiar with his works.... the concertos?

http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dc.asp?dc=D_CDA68002&vw=dc

This one might bring negative reactions from many of us as we already have very good recordings of the work, but I am excited because this series seems to have finally picked up some speed.

Composers & Music / Järvi and Dvořák
Monday 17 February 2014, 15:23
Recently Järvi's Raff has got very good response so I was wondering.... How would the members rate his version of Dvořák symphonies [on Chandos]. I have the Václav Neumann with Czech Philarmonic Orchestra but find the tempo a bit draggy  :-[.
Which is the best overall Dvořák Symphony set!

Although Marco Polo has done an almost complete series of Spohr's String Quartets, No. 10 , 18, 23 and 26 are yet to be done. Of these there seems to be no mention of No. 10 anywhere. Is this work lost? What about the other three?

Stojowski's Piano Concerto No. 3 was mentioned as "performable" somewhere in this forum. I would like to know if the score exists! I had written to Mr. Jonathan Plowrith asking him if he would consider taking up the 3rd concerto and the Rhapsody. I just received an email from him. He says: "According to Stojowski's official biographer and cataloguer of works Joseph Herter, the 3rd Concerto was never published and has unfortunately been lost – along with many other works. []  know otherwise, that would be very interesting." Hopefully someone can shed some light....

It seems that Mr. Plowrith recorded the Rhapsody with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Lukasz Borowicz about 18 months ago. The same CD also contains the Symphony!!!!

Composers & Music / Heinrich Schulz-Beuthen
Tuesday 30 April 2013, 07:58
Other than the Sterling recording of his Symphony No. 5 there seems to be nothing much else. Even the wiki article is scant. It talks about 10 Symphonies and a Piano Concerto. Can anyone share some info on this forgotten composer? What else did he write?
