Composers & Music / Romantic Cello Concertos
Friday 08 March 2013, 10:14
The discussion about the upcoming Reinecke Cello Concerto got me to thinking What has happened to Hyperion's Romantic Cello Concerto? Any news on that front? And on a slightly different note, "will CPO record the rest of the Cello Concertos [2, 3] of Julius Klengel"?

I came across Hubert Ries while reading about his brother Ferdinand. Apparently he wrote two violin concertos and quite a bit of chamber music. Can anyone share more info in this composer?

Does anyone have a catalog of Théodore Dubois's music? Did he write any symphonies? Or concertos for that matter... All I have is  his Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor on the Musicales Actes .

I just heard samples [very bad sound quality] on youtube of Théo Ysaÿe's Piano Concerto in E flat major, op. 9. It seems he is the brother of Eugène Ysaÿe. Does anyone have any info of him? Apparently there is also a Piano Concerto No. 2 in manuscript - Solo part and full score available according to this article http://www.lib.umd.edu/PAL/IPAM/IPAM9617.PDF.

Hyperion just announced The Romantic Violin Concerto, Vol. 13 – Schumann

... Am very disappointed. Isn't there enough recordings of the Schumann concerto out there already. Now the Violin Concerto by Georg Schumann would have been something. Hope Hyperion has some real winners in the future otherwise the RVC seems to be heading for defunct central!!! :(

Composers & Music / Dvorak - Suitner or Davis?
Tuesday 27 December 2011, 05:02
Given the huge amount of Dvorak Complete Symphony cycles out, which is the best set? Also between the sets by Suitner and Davis which is better?

Recordings & Broadcasts / De Beriot VC6 and VC10
Saturday 12 November 2011, 15:08
Does anyone know if and when De Beriot's Violin concertos No. 6 & 10 will be recorded? I just stumbled across 3 Cd's - 2 from Naxos - No.'s  1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 and Cpo - No's 2, 4, 7 and have fallen in love with each and every one of them. What exquisite treasures - the violin equivalent of Herz's Piano Concerti ... with a little more gumption!

Composers & Music / Anton Rubinstein - Symphony No 5
Wednesday 04 August 2010, 10:49
I just finished listening to Anton Rubinstein's Symphony No 5 on Marco Polo. What a beautiful piece ...and very RUSSIAN from a man mocked for just the opposite by the FIVE!!!
The Ist movement is very gripping.
The IInd movement is the so Sprightly... (played this over and over again!!!)

Any opinions on this work.
(or is it just the MAGIC of No. 5 ?!?)

Recordings & Broadcasts / Sacheverell Coke
Saturday 05 June 2010, 09:04
While reading the reviews of Macdowell's Piano concerto, I came across the name of a composer who seems to have written 6 piano concertos "..under the influence of Rachmaninov..". The name is R Sacheverell Coke. I googled it to find only bits and pieces of info on this composer (Even his name is confusing... some list him as Richard, others Roger!!!) Has anyone heard any works by this composer........the aforementioned piano concertos?????

Composers & Music / About Coloratura singing.
Saturday 22 May 2010, 12:35
Yesterday I was going through a couple of videos on youtube when i saw two very different versions of the aria "Agitata da due venti" From La Griselda by Vivaldi .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hxWT6o3SwY
sung by Cecilia Bartoli
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnIxa-QUL5U
by Vivica Genaux.
Bartoli is ofcourse a master, but when i saw the Genaux video I was a bit surprised..... is that the correct way to sing coloratura. I absolutely have no idea about singing techniques but Genaux's "lip" thing seemed a bit questionable.  I thought that Coloratura was sung from deep within (as with Bartoli!) and not by the lips!!!
Anyone out there who could give a clearer picture???
