Great detective work, Eric. 

Like Alan, I've carefully collected whatever Foerster I could over the years and always thought I should enjoy it more than I actually do. Alan's description captures my reactions perfectly, but I will also give me another run....   

Every book, report, website, etc, etc, declares that only the scores of Tausig's piano music still exist. Is there any reason to doubt that? 

My first thought is that the answer is "all the composers we discuss on UC whose names do not appear in any edition of Grove."  I suspect it includes many non-European and women composers (the relevant threads on UC include long lists of utterly neglected women composers, who could be singled out in response to your post).

I wonder if we would ever have heard any Hans Bronsart if it were not for that old Vox recording of the Piano Concerto. It was certainly my only recording of his music. When you think about it, those 'Vox boxes' and Turnabout LPs included a remarkable selection of neglected music and little-known composers.

Me too! I've been on holiday up in the far North of Queensland, and now there are so many interesting posts to catch up on, and the downloads are just a joy. Thank you, indeed.

..... but they are mostly of popular music, easy listening, and the like. In venturing definitive statements about the revival of the orchestral suite I would think he's moved well beyond his area of expertise!

I've just been prompted by this to listen again to the Dvarionas Violin Concerto. If any UC members have not heard it then do give it a try. It's a fine romantic concerto - half a century out of date! 

Well, you all beat me hands down.... as far as romantic symphonies go, all I could think of was Gliere's Ilya Murometz! 

Maybe Mackeben's Piano Concerto in B flat minor (1945) might also be a contender? Mackeben was another composer who concentrated on stage works, including at least half a dozen operettas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theo_Mackeben), but produced a single piano concerto in a rather different style to his other works. I seem to recall that I downloaded his concerto from UC.

On the subject of Goldmark's orchestral music, does anyone know of a recording (or better still have an uploadable version!) of, his Scherzo in A major, Op.45. I've had it on my wants list for years. 

Gosh, this has got me thinking.

One of my old favourites is the Symphony No.3 'Westmorland' by Armstrong Gibbs - unless you mean cities/towns, in which case how about Daniel Mason's Symphony No.3 - 'Lincoln'? 

I suppose the work of Oscar Straus is looked down upon because he wrote operettas rather than operas.  For listeners who don't speak German maybe they are tedious, but The Chocolate Soldier is undeniably sweet.

What little of the piano music of Ignaz BRÜLL that I've heard suggests an unfairly neglected body of romantic piano music. Anyone familiar with it, and willing to give an overview?
