Composers & Music / Alexander Zemlinsky 150th Birthday
Thursday 14 October 2021, 16:19
On the occasion of Alexander Zemlinsky's 150th birthday today, his main publisher UNIVERSAL EDITION in Vienna  has created a page that revolves around the life, the work and the composer himself. I hope it will be of interest to many in this forum.

Composers & Music / Re: Reznicek – Der Frieden

How wonderful!

CPO has a series going and must surely be planning to record it. Presumably new parts had to be created for this performance which augurs well for a recording. If the concert is broadcast, CPO may of course just issue that.

Thank you Alan.
Sound like a must have CD!!!

Recordings & Broadcasts / Zingari (Leoncavallo) Update
Friday 01 October 2021, 17:08
I have just been reading that Opera Rara's planned recording of ZINGARI by Leoncavallo ( previously announced on this board  & which I have been longing to hear for decades) will actually be made following a live concert performance at London's Cadogan Hall on December 3!

See:-

As you an see the cast is now listed. Any comments on these singers Alan? Are they up to the job?
The recording will be made in the studio later. Carlo Rizzi is a good conductor in this kind of repertoire and the RPO is  a great band.

Thank you Alan. Sorry the link failed - one of the mysteries of the Internet, which I will never fathom!

Recordings & Broadcasts / New CD of Korngold's Sextet etc.
Saturday 25 September 2021, 17:33
Yet another new CD of Korngold's chamber works is announced.

Date of release is yet to be confirmed, but this is a very attractive programme with some fine musicians from Berlin, and that will include Korngold's gorgeous String Sextet!

Recordings & Broadcasts / Hans Hermann Heller (1898 - 1969)
Saturday 25 September 2021, 09:44
I have looked diligently on all parts of the forum and find no mention of this composer. A friend of mine who is studying his music asked me if there are any recordings available of his music? I wondered if anyone here knows?

Many thanks for any help.

I am here merely to report the news of new recordings, interesting concerts. I cannot comment on the performances because it's a matter of taste and for others to say. I am just happy the repertoire is getting exposure. Schreker's lovely songs are hardly ever done and recordings are few & far between. So this is a welcome step in my view, even if for some, the performances are not top notch. Ms Fleming is now in vocal decline and tailoring her repertoire choices accordingly (hence her forays into jazz & popular music of late). I do not know any young singers of the Janowitz/Price calibre.

RELEASED Sept 10: a new CD from German soprano Dorothea Herbert of rarely performed and extremely beautiful  lieder by Alma Mahler, Franz Schreker and Erich Wolfgang Korngold!  Very welcome indeed.

Dear Martin

Pity you could not be at the London PROMS on Saturday evening. The Korngold Symphony received an electrifying performance from the Sinfonia of London conducted by John Wilson. It will be televised on BBC FOUR on Thursday evening at 7pm (GMT) which is presumably available via BBC SOUNDS on line.

Regarding the film music, Warner Brothers is the problem, they have been uninterested in doing anything with this music in spite of repeated attempts by myself and others to make it more accessible. I spend a lot of my time fielding email queries from conductors and orchestra managers about how to get performance materials for this music.

The chamber music is becoming increasingly popular so I am sure it will make its way to your area soon. This month I wrote notes for the IRISH premiere of the 1st String Quartet for a festival in County Kilkenny!

As of this date, Oliver's house is still being sorted and cleared. Much will go into storage. Meanwhile, the quest for premises go on.

Anatoly Lyadov: Choral Music.

A very welcome CD with almost all world premiere recordings of beautiful music by this greatly underrated composer. I can hardly wait! Released September 3.
