Title: Blagoje Bersa piano works (volume 1)
Post by: eschiss1 on Saturday 16 December 2017, 16:06
Forthcoming, next month on Grand Piano: see Naxos' website (https://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=GP767).

Bersa (1873-1934) has been mentioned on this forum before in other contexts :) Born in Dubrovnik, student of Ivan Zajc, Robert Fuchs and (Rufinatscha pupil) Julius Epstein, known for his Dramatic Overture and his operas, iirc.  Regarded as one of the more important Croatian composers of the period (along with Pejacevic?).

Yes - spotted this too. A must-buy for me.

...and the CD turned up in the post today. Am listening as I type to the highly attractive early (1897) Piano Sonata, a one-movement structure featuring writing of true heroic grandeur alternating with some meltingly lyrical passages. This'll become a favourite of mine - worth the price of the CD on its own. Grand Piano are now probably the most adventurous label as regards the piano repertoire. It's worth keeping an eye on them!
