I find these works utterly captivating. Juon's music always grabs the listener (well, at least this one) and says 'listen to me!', either by dint of force (e.g. Wogen) or seduction (as in the Romantisches Wiegenlied). The playing of Rodolfo Ritter brings out these contrasting qualities with great finesse.
And, this is the first disc of (I suppose) a complete 'survey' of his piano music, which means yet another set to go on my 'wants' list!

In a Zurich Serenade Concert of June 26th, Paul Juon's Divertimento, op. 51 (for piano and wind quintet) was very well performed. An extremely charming piece and rather difficult to play!
Swiss Radio recorded this concert, for a broadcast on July 27th.

The performance of the Divertimento by the Hexagon Ensemble (on the Etcetera label) is available on YouTube, and is a joy.

This is a CD of absolutely sublime and original piano music. Not always straightforward listening, but always absorbing and sometimes utterly magical. Just don't expect Rachmaninov or even Medtner. Juon's music is often darker, more exploratory, more complex than either.

..and what playing! There's an exquisite sensitivity to the wide range of moods exhibited by these pieces. I hope the awards panels have this wonderful CD on their radar...
