Most members seem to have liking for the Brahms Piano concerto no. 1 but i prefer the Beethoven No. 4. I know ths not stunning but I love a memorable entree! Glazunov's second concerto is also beautiful.
French composers seem to have a knack for writing quicksiver and catchy openings -
Stanislao Silesu - Piano concerto in E flat
Admiral Jean Cras - Piano concerto
Massenet - Piano concerto.
Saint-Saens - Concerto No. 5

Other stunning PC openings' fav.
Medtner - Concerto no. 2!!!!!
Reynaldo Hahn - concerto
Stanford - Piano concerto No. 2
Bowen - Piano concerto No. 3
Lyapunov No. 2
Ernst Mielck - Concert Piece For Piano & Orchestra
Raff -  'Ode au Printemps'
Manuel Ponce - Piano Concerto.
Berwald - Piano concerto (A peculiar concerto I enjoy listening to!)

I kind of agree with you about the Grove being unreliable. My piano teacher has the complete A-Z volumes; Under Glazunov's works Grove mentions a second Violin concerto in "A major" (not sure what Op. no .. i think 77). I tried searching every possible place I could think about and came up with nothing. I guess being a Glazunov fan I found the aspect of another violin concerto titillating. Glazunov is by no means a lesser known composer so I still find it hard to believe they could have bungled up so. Anybody come across this "phantom" concerto if only as a mention ??!!??

Well Groove's mentions it.

I just finished listening to the Bortkiewicz 2nd & 3rd and I think its Hyperion loss. Just No. 2 - What a stunning opening !!! By the way is there any plan for ever recording the Bortkiewicz Violin and Cello Concerti

Curiously no one seems to have mentioned the Reynaldo Hahn piano concerto with its quirky finale. Here are some more
Gibbs - Concertino for Piano and String Orchestra Op. 103
Artur Lemba Piano Concerto No. 1 in G major
Peter Benoit - Piano Concerto
Ernst Mielck - Concert Piece for Piano & Orchestra (Absolutely beautiful!!!!!!)
Friedrich Kuhlau - Piano Concerto in C Major, Op. 7 (Humorous finale)
Isaac Albéniz - Concierto fantástico
Manuel Ponce - Piano Concerto (Hair-raising!!)
Scharwenka - Piano concerto No. 4

Has anyone ever heard the Ketelby Piano sonata.

I have only heard  No. 3 Im Walde and No. 10 Zur Herbstzeit...so No. 3 is my natural choice with the largo favorite; I find the beautiful woodwind passages languorously beautiful with the sudden piu mosso middle passage . I'm waiting to hear No. 5 . I know this is a discussion about Raff symphonies but there is one other symphony that has had an impression on me (beside the obvious Berwald No. 3) - Kallinikov's Symphony No. 1.

Well its nice to know that Hyperion has decided to record the 2 Godard piano concertos . I believe there is one other concertante work for piano and orchestra!?!
On a different note how about the Novacek - Piano Concerto Op 8. I had a look through the score and its dynamic stuff. has it ever been recorded?

Has there been any recording of the Piano concertos of Godard. I just heard his Violin concertos and they are outstanding!

Nielsen's Op. 1 Little suite for strings did it for me. I was hooked after the 1st hearing..actually that was the 1st classical piece i ever heard. A few days later the Berwald 3rd Symphony - Singulare. Since then I have been curious about unsung composers, and as a result encountered many gems one wouldn't hear in the concert halls!
