Composers & Music / Is Niels Gade unsung?
Friday 10 July 2009, 01:14
I did a little wiki-reading on Mr. Gade and he's obviously important to Denmark, but I had not heard of him until he was listed as a recommendation on a music site I frequent.

The snippet I heard sounded good...would anyone else recommend him?

Thanks!

Composers & Music / Composer Rivalries?
Thursday 09 July 2009, 19:34
This topic (came to my mind after reading the Rott thread) may work on the unsung level, particularly if we have composers who were unsung due to rivalries....

I am always fascinated by the interrelationships between composers.  In particular, rivalries or other issues are especially interesting to me.   I read a book about Beethoven and there was some discussion about his relationship with Haydn -- possibly the most compelling section from my standpoint.

Are there good stories about rival composers?  I'd love to hear about them, or any other stories about the interrelationships with composers.

Just curious about the members' other musical preferences (if any).   Do you have a specific type of music you listen to if it isn't "classical"?

Believe it or not, I tend to listen to more Rock/Metal (more of the "progressive" vein I guess).

Composers & Music / Guitar Music?
Saturday 04 July 2009, 14:41
I was curious if anyone had any unsung guitar pieces or otherwise written by unsung composers that they might want to recommend?

It seems like there isn't a lot of music specifically written for the guitar -- hopefully I'm wrong on this.  I am not looking for a piece written for another instrument that is later arranged for a guitar -- not that they can't be beautiful pieces, but I'm looking for ones specifically written for the guitar.

Thanks!

Composers & Music / Opera -- Where to Start?
Sunday 21 June 2009, 16:37
One more question for the board...

I've never really appreciated opera, but I wonder if there might be something I am missing in that genre.

I am looking for any recommendations.  Just so you know -- I tend to like the entire thing (unabridged books, the entire sporting event rather than highlights -- and for music, the entire work as opposed to excerpts).   I also am looking more at the era and unsung composers that this board focuses on.

Thanks as always in advance for any recommendations/suggestions/discussion, etc.

Composers & Music / Film music....
Sunday 21 June 2009, 16:03
I preface this by stating that forums such as this make me realize how little I've scratched from the "classical" music surface.  There are so many unsung composers and musical works, that I might be content (and never truly exhaust) with what exists outside of film scores.   I am applying this to the "romantic" sound that is prevalent in so many works.  That being said....

My first introduction to symphonic music was likely through the movies I enjoyed as a child.  John Williams' scores for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, you name it, were so catchy.  Even now, it's interesting to see how my own kids catch onto the music.  Humming the "Imperial March" after just watching the movie, etc.

What are your thoughts on film music?   Is it a legitimate form of classical music (I know Aaron Copland argued that in "What to Listen For in Music")?  Will you listen to it separate from the film?

Composers & Music / Question?
Sunday 21 June 2009, 04:20
I've been on for a week now and enjoying the conversations that have been going on.   For some reason, I didn't notice the comment in the "Composers and Music" forum that says this is essentially for Romantic-era composers.

Should all the topics be specific to that, or is it more wide open to include all eras?  I assume the latter based on some of the threads, but I wanted to make sure I was reading this right.

Probably not a big deal, but I didn't want to bring up topics that are not appropriate to this forum.

Thanks!

I had an e-mail based on registering for Classicsonline.com and there were a lot of $2.99 CDs on naxosdirect.   Everyone may know it -- or not need it, but I thought I'd share.

I'd be interested to know if any of you are "unsung" composers in your own right.

I had a Music Appreciation teacher in college (Paul Siskind) who is a composer and I've thought about getting his stuff someday.

I know I'm starting very broad, but I'm broadening (I swear I didn't intend this to get so punny early on) my own musical tastes.  I've tended to be of the mindset that if the symphony is the be-all-end-all of a composer's strength.   Something struck me in another post when someone said that the composer's piano concertos were his strengths.

I'd love to know what/why you tend to gravitate towards a particular piece of music.

Also, any "unsung" suggestions would be most appreciated!

Composers & Music / New Member...
Tuesday 16 June 2009, 18:18
While on another forum, I inquired about good places for classical music discussions and "Unsung Composers" was one of the responses I received.

I doubt I can offer a lot to this group, but a lot of questions.  I don't have an extensive musical background, although I love listening to classical music and have considerably broadened my tastes to include works that are not so popular/tonal as perhaps I would have required in the past.

While I think I can grasp the "unsung" descriptor, I am a little concerned that I might mis-label some composers.  It is possible I may inquire about a composer I'm not particularly familiar with, but it will turn out is the most-respected composer of a specific genre/instrument/style.   Feel free to set me straight though!

I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum.
