Here are details on the works and performances I've posted in the Downloads folder:
Stjepan Sulek (1914-1986)
Symphony No. 1 (1944)
I. Allegro
II. Adagio
III. Allegro moderato
Symphony No. 2 "Eroica" (1946)
I. Allegro
II. Adagio
III. Scherzo
both works performed by:
Croatian Radio & TV Symphony Orchestra
Pavle Despalj, conductor
Symphony No. 4 (1954) [movements played without pause]
I. Prologue (un poco sostenuto)
II. Allegro con fuoco
III. Adagio -- Presto -- Adagio
IV. Allegro con brio
Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra
Kresimir Baranovic, conductor
None of these works have ever received commercial recordings. These are dubs from concert broadcasts.
Wikipedia claims, anyway, that the dates (of composition? publication?) of symphonies 1, 2 and 4 are 1944, 1946 and 1954. Amazon.com claims symphony 4 was published in 1961... (some of this may be possible, if not necessarily from the internet solely :) , to work out...) edit: it was published in 1961 - evidence (http://www.jstor.org/pss/731177) from a 1962 issue of Music & Letters (one needs permission to read further into the issue, though. Once had that permission as a staff member at university; no longer do. though one can find the issue in a library- it is July 1962, vol.43 no.3.) Oh- sorry- my mistake... is 1965 the year of broadcast? also, the dates for 2 seem to be 1944 to 1946. Wikipedia's source for some of those dates may have been this PDF- Croatian PDF article (http://www.wam.hr/arhiva/US/Sulek_Sedak.pdf) (in English, sorry, based on a Croatian server) by Eva Sedak (entitled Stjepan Sulek- the Antiprogressive?)
Thanks for the clarification, eschiss1. I'm not sure where I came up with for the dates, but clearly they're wrong. Yes, 1965 may have been the broadcast date, but unfortunately I don't have additional data on the broadcasts.
According to New Grove in Oxford Music Online, dates for the symphonies should be:
1: 1944
2: 1946
3: 1948
4: 1954
5: 1963
6: 1966
7: 1979
8: 1981
I'll make corrections in the previous posting.
I've also now uploaded the 3rd Symphony, information for which is as follows:
Symphony No. 3 (1948)
I Allegro
II Scherzo
III Larghetto
Croatian Radio & TV Symphony Orchestra
Pavle Despalj, conductor
Thanks for these Latvian, but I can only find the First and Second Symphonies. No sign of Nos.3 and 4.
that's a good point... ah, ok, there now...
Thank you very much for these sulek symphonies. I believe i only had 1 symphony, but cant find it anywhere ! So thanks again.
Tony
I can upload the Sulek Symphonies No.6 and 7, if anyone would be interested
I believe both from lp.
Tony
Yes please do!
according to a scan at eBay of the back cover of the LP of symphony 6 (premiered 23 May 1966), the movement headings are
I. Adagio non troppo - Allegro moderato - Allegretto (Quasi una marcia fantastica)
II. Adagio- Presto.
The notes can also be read there until the seller removes or relists the item. The composer is conducting the Zagreb Radio-Television Symphony.
Thank you very much to upload.
I was surprised to these powerful symphonies :o.
Symphony No. 2 recalls me Erwin Schulhoff's symphony.

Welcome to UC, Lechner
Thanks Fyrexia for the Sulek symphonies. Maybe my browser is in error, but the 7th symphony is marked 'private only' and cannot be downloaded.
Balapoel
Just got it public again. Will disactivate in 24 hrs.
Tony
Symphony 7 - forget if this already has been posted - conductor possibly Pavle Dešpalj , Zagrebačkom filharmonija (series Hrvatski skladatelji = "Croatian composers" no.4) , from a 1980s (1980??) Jugoton LP (LSY 66087).
Once again taking advantage of someone who has this listed on ebay and has the LP image scanned, the movements of symphony 7 (1973?) are:
Side A. I. Moderato- Poco meno (Allegro moderato)
II. Adagio non troppo.
Side B. III. Allegro non troppo
IV. Presto - Allegro vivo (Pochetissimo meno)
Unfortunetly the links for 6 and 7 (http://www.mediafire.com/?qjli3fx5yqli9lm and http://www.mediafire.com/?2q08pvr2dhz8yep) both seem to be set private.
Have there been any Sulek 6 & 7 developments since July 10? My own versions are dim and scratchy and would be very grateful indeed for downloads.
Listened to the first two movements of Sulek 7 (sorry to take so long, and will listen to the other two very soon) - distracted by the feeling, as in a few other works (some of which I have heard quite a few times and like very much, e.g. Boris Tchaikovsky 2 which whether or not it contains a single quotation, has somehow that feeling of quoting-sections...??...; or Shostakovich symphony 15, or one of Eshpai's sonatas...- this is not in itself a complaint) that there is a whole lot of quoting going on. Very effectively and appropriately, it seems on a first listen, from Mahler and Bruckner and perhaps others? - but - well, in Prokofiev's Fiery Angel one has an opera that gets quoted from by a work I know better, but it's hard for me to concentrate on the "new" (to me) music because of that, so - a subjective thing I suppose. Ah, I dwell on it- it was worth hearing, the Sulek, as the other two movements will be and the whole will be worth hearing again. Thanks :)!!!
I can´t download Symphonies 6 and 7 ("private"), and the first movmt of the Third.
Is it only my problem?
Thanks a lot!!
Had the same prob. with Sym 3 mv 1 too - I've tried over some hours today

I had the good fortune to be presented, by a friend, with a couple of discs of Sulek's music - taken from the Jugoton LPs.
Today I listened to the Seventh Symphony and Sulek's Third Piano Concerto. I really was impressed with the quality of the work. The symphony opens with a lyrical, almost pastoral feeling - replete with what seemed to me to be bird calls - and including some interior climaxes which were quite thrilling. The rest of the piece is a bit more serious and the second movement resembles a funeral march at times. The finale is brilliant and quirky in a Shostakovich-ian manner.
The Piano Concerto No.3 was a revelation and I ran through it twice. It opens as a sort of concertante work, with the piano not as dominant as it later becomes. The second movement is filled with bird calls and sounds like a music box. Again, the piece ends in a romp to the finish line - similar in style to that of the Seventh Symphony.
Well done - and now I am on to Sulek's Sixth Symphony.
Same problem as others with Sulek 3. Have not tried 6 or 7. Best to all.
Please tell me where I can find the download links for Sulek Symphony 7 and PC 3. I am new to Unsung Composers but I am not new to classical music. Latvian and I have been friends and exchanging music for many years.
I just uploaded Sym#6 and #7 by Sulek. Enjoy these :)
Does anyone have a link to Sulek's Piano Concerto No.3? I tried to send a message to febnyc but he has blocked my messages for an unknown reason since I have never sent him a message before. He claims he has listened to it.

I have no idea why your messages do not reach me - I have not "blocked" them.
At any rate, please read my initial post on Sulek. I heard the Piano Concerto No.3 on a CD made for me and given to me by a friend who owns the original LP. I do not have a "link."
Hi febnyc. Would you please consider uploading Sulek's Piano Concerto No.3 to Unsung Composers?

Hi febnyc. Would you please consider uploading Sulek's Piano Concerto No.3 to Unsung Composers?
fr8nks: I would be happy to do so, but don't know the routine.
Hi febnyc,
I would be glad to walk you through the steps to upload music. I would even call you on the telephone at my expense to do so. I can relate to your situation in never having uploaded before. Up until a week ago I had never done it either and I was afraid of being overwhelmed by the procedure. Now I think it is pretty easy. You only need the capability of converting a WAV file to MP3 or being able to download a CD onto your computer in MP3 format to begin with.
I'll understand if this is something you don't care to do but if that is the case would you please get the label and LP number from your friend so I can search for the LP?
By the way, I just tried to send this to you as a message and a red warning appeared stating that personal messages were being blocked by you. If you don't want this to happen, please check your account settings. Thanks.
Awfully sorry to disappoint but I would prefer not to get into converting files, etc.
I think this is the LP - on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BJELINSKI-SULEK-PAPANDOPULO-KRPAN-YUGOSLAV-LP-1973-MINT-/140541177296?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item20b8e82dd0 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/BJELINSKI-SULEK-PAPANDOPULO-KRPAN-YUGOSLAV-LP-1973-MINT-/140541177296?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item20b8e82dd0)
P.S. - Thanks, I have modified my account settings to allow receipt of all personal messages.
Thanks, febnyc, I just bought the LP which I will upload once I receive it. Your info was a big help and I'm glad you modified your account settings.

ttle, Thanks for making these Sulek works available (Symphony Five and Symphony Eight). I really appreciate it.
Quotettle, Thanks for making these Sulek works available (Symphonies 5 & . I really appreciate it.
Seconded! I've been yearning for these works for years!
I just finished listening to Sulek's Symphony No.5 and it is one of the most beautiful symphonies I have ever heard. All of you who have listed symphonies that you cannot live without need to listen to this utterly beautiful creation because it could alter your choices. This is not to be missed. Thanks again for the upload.

I don't know how yours turned out. The first two movements of my DL came through just fine, but from 2:06 to 2:11 in the finale, the music simply cuts out. Just 5 seconds of dead silence. Then it comes back. I don't know if I should just try downloading it again or if the same thing is happening to everybody else. Could you let me know? If it's just me, I'll reload it. BTW, this guy sounds like another major 20th Century symphonist. I hear a little Miaskovsky in there, too. And Bartok. And Ives.
Know what? Fuhgeddaboudit. I'll delete that file and reload it and won't post anything more on the subject unless the same thing happens again.
Well, I'm posting again. It isn't me it's the file. Ttle, could you please reupload that movement in mediafire? Something obviously went wrong, and it cuts out a good 5 seconds of music towards the beginning (as I said from 2:06 to 2:11 in).

Jim, I had the same problem but was able to edit out the 5 seconds of silence. It is almost unnoticeable. If you like I can upload the last movement for you.
Please do. I'm starting to wonder if the silence contains missing music or if it is just an interruption.

Thanks. It sounds like there's missing music, but I think this passage is repeated later on so at least I'll have an idea of what's missing with repeated listenings. We really need to find a way to get this music performed and recorded, don't you think? ;)

I agree. I sent an email to the Croation radio station that broadcast this hoping to obtain a recording of it. Naxos or CPO should record all of Sulek's symphonies.
Just downloaded Sulek's Sym.no.3, there was only two files, no.3-2 and no.3-3 for total of around 13 minutes. Is this it or is there another file I missed? Thank you in advance.

Drat these file sharing sites! File 3-1 most assuredly was there at one time, but seems to have vanished for some reason. I'll reupload when I get a chance. Thanks for letting me know!
Please,
Can anybody upload the first mov. of the Third Symphony of Stjepan Sulek, which disappeared on http://www.mediafire.com/?j8ub1u9r76b7b?
Thanks!!

Please excuse my probable stupidity but I cannot find any of the rest of Sulek's 3rd Symphony on the site ::)
Can someone please direct me to it ???
Just click on the link in the Sulek download section for Symphonies 1 & 2 in the beginning, it will be there.
Ah yes....thank you :)
I remember now ;D The reason I did not download was because the first movement appears to be missing :(

Hi Colin,
Thanks for the Audacity link and here is a link to the 1st movement of the Sulek 3rd Symphony.
www.mediafire.com/download.php?0nvxjip4vgxbbtx
Many thanks :) Now complete :)
My thanks also, listened to yesterday.
since you guys seem to be the experts on sulek:
does anyone know anything about (or even posess) a recording of his opera "the tempest" ("oluja")?
or do you have any info on his publishers so that i can try to track the work down?
thanks a lot from a new member
:)
(what a forum! made my day!!!)
In my hopelessly inadequate efforts to catch up with all the beautiful music that was downloaded here before I joined, never mind that which has come since, just listening now to the 6th Symphony, tried first as the experts seem to think it's his best.
Wonderful, thanks. Mr. Sulek has a new convert !

Ow, I am awfully sorry that I missed this exchange. Many thanks to fr8nks for editing the gap out. Naturally, if I ever come across a more seamless recording, I shall upload it again.
I uploaded a complete performance of Symphony No.5 on 01 February 2012 from a rebroadcast.
about the 2nd symphony (have almost finished listening to it) I assume the last track isn't just a scherzo- did someone give a tempo indication for the finale (I'm guessing the 20 minutes contains a scherzo and finale linked, which is how it sounds? Raw emotions and difficult to listen to for that reason, but very good in all- I have a gripe or two but like it on a first listen. Thanks!!)
I work with a Croatian doctor. I burned a CD of the PC 3 and S 5 for him. Just spreadin' the word!

Indeed, the title of the movements are Allegro con brio - Adagio - Scherzo - Finale, the last two linked. Raw indeed but very strong stuff in my opinion.
Thanks, ttle, for the Sulek Classical Concerto No.3. We now have numbers 2, 3 & 4. Do you have No.1?
Absolutely stunning: all those Sulek works.
So far I only got a poor recording of Symphony Nº 5 and a little better one of his 4th Concerto
Many, many thanks for these uploads!!
Elroel
Are you saying that you only have those two works or that you have all the uploads and those two are in poor sound? All of the symphonies have been uploaded.
