Recordings & Broadcasts / Tor Aulin on CPO
Thursday 20 December 2012, 22:01
CPO is about to release a CD with orchestral music by Swedish turn of the century composer Tor Aulin:
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/cpo/detail/-/art/Tor-Aulin-1866-1914-Musik-zu-Strindbergs-M%E4ster-Olof-op-22/hnum/1389801

All the works on the CD are available on earlier recordings (Sterling and Musica Sveciae) but it seems to be a fairly good compilation of Aulins non-concertante orchestral works.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Ludovit Rajter
Wednesday 30 March 2011, 06:44
There has been some discussion about the new Pejacevic CD. However, CPO has simultaneously released a CD with music by her younger countryman Ludovit Rajter. According to CPO he worked "in spätromatischer Tradition". From the soundclips on their homepage it seems that he moves stylistically somewhere between the late romantics and composers like Kabalevsky. Has anyone heard the CD? Impressions?

Composers & Music / Peter Crossley-Holland
Wednesday 22 December 2010, 13:46
Has anyone on this Forum heard the Dutton recording of Peter Crossley-Holland's symphony in d-major? From the excerpts available on jpc.de it sounds as if the symphony is written in a traditional romantic idiom. Is that observation correct and what about the quality of the music?

Composers & Music / Friedrich Witt - a revolutionary?
Monday 18 October 2010, 08:53
A while ago, Naxos released an excellent disc with music by Friedrich Witt. The CD contains a flute concerto, the so called Jena Symphony (once falsely attributed to Beethoven), and a charming little symphony in A minor. If I'm not mistaken, the Finale is in part based on a French revolutionary song (Ca ira?). Does any member know if this is a political statement from Witt or if he perhaps was just hoping for a career in Paris (pre-Napoleon)?

Naxos is releasing a new Stenhammar CD in september with the Gävle S O and Hannu Koivola. The main attraction on the CD is Stenhammar's Serenade. However, it also includes a piece from Stenhammar's youth, Prelude and Bourree. It is probably far from a masterpiece, but it is the only purely orchestral work by Stenhammar that has not been recorded before. A must for a lover of Stenhammar's music like me!  :)

Those who bought the first volume of Natanael Berg's symphonies on CPO might be interested to know that the second volume will soon be released, according to the JPC web-site:

A few years ago Danish label Classico released a CD with Frederíc Cowens 6th symphony and Samuel Coleridge-Taylors A-minor symphony. A few weeks ago, I finaly managed to get hold on a copy of it.

Both works on the CD are truly interesting, though maybe not in the major league. Cowen is not a composer of the same stature as his three famous contemporaries, Elgar, Stanford and Parry, but his present neglect certainly doesn't seem fair. Coleridge-Taylors symphony is a student work (which is most apparent in the last movement). However, it is full of original ideas and memorable tunes, and all in all it is good enough to make you wish that the composer would have followed it up with more works of the same sort.

Has anyone else bought this CD, and what are your reactions?

Recordings & Broadcasts / More unsung piano concertos?
Wednesday 21 October 2009, 06:52
According to an article in a local newspaper in Helsingborg, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra is involved in recording "a series of piano concertos by Stenhammar and Wiklund" for Hyperion. In other words, it is likely that we will se a Romantic Piano Concerto CD with the two piano concertos of Adolf Wiklund. :)

Recordings & Broadcasts / Robert Hermann
Sunday 13 September 2009, 14:24
At aboth the same time as Sterling released their Noskowski CD they also released a CD containing the two symphonies by Swiss composer Robert Hermann. Noskowski has received well deserved attention and praise from a number of members of this Forum. I have not seen any comments on the Hermann CD, though.

In my opinion, Hermanns two symphonies are rather uneven and especially the first sometimes balances on the border to light music. However, there are also moments of great beauty in both symphonies. Have any other members listened to this CD?

It is now confirmed on the Naxos homepage that the Gävle Symphony Orchestra will record two symphonies by Joachim Eggert for Naxos!

Good news, indeed! ;D

Phoenix has released a triple CD of music inspired by the Orient, including this piece:

Louis Etienne Ernst REYER: The Greeting Oriental symphony in five pictures

Anyone familiar with this symphony and its composer?
