Composers & Music / Re: Yuri Butsko
Tuesday 07 August 2012, 15:23
You are right, it is difficult to find information about Butzko in the net, I had this problem trying to find something about his more recent works, for instance his sixth symphony with the intriguing title "Leaving Russia". As it is a favorite of mine I will try to translate with the help of Google translator, his entry in the booklet written by Jacques di Vanni "1953-1983, 30 ans de musique soviétique" (sorry, but my French is better than my English).

"Butzko (Yuri Markovich) composer, born in Lubny (Poltava country, Ukraine) in 1938, graduated at the Moscow Conservatory (piano, choral chant and composition with S.A. Balassanian) and as historian at the Pedagogic Institute (1955-66). The ancient Russian history and the choral chant have a essential place in his production; modal music, ancient liturgies, archaism taken from several folkloric sources from his natal Ukraine and the North of Russia. Stravinsky's  "Russian period" influence is also manifest in his style. He is one of the foremost representants of the "Old Russia" school. Several quasi legendary personages as the leader of the peasants revolts under the Empress Catherine, Pugachev or the warrior saints Boris and Lev, and also themes taken from Gogol and Dostoievsky, demonstrate a specifically Russian thematic.
His borrowings from Western techniques are rare, and unlike the soviet composers influenced by the post-serialism and the short form, he prefers to compose works of great length (Polyphonic Concert for 4 pianos, 2h 30)".
Follows a list of principal works covered much better by eschiss1

After reading the many thoughtful comments, I have nothing much to add, only giving my most heartfelt thanks to Mark and Alan as creators and administrators of this wonderful site!.
Personally, I would prefer to have a clear set of rules (any set, arbitrary or not) that will help me to decide which music we are asked to upload, so I will not felt guilty for adding to the site music which is of little or no interest to the majority of the members.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Decline of BBC R3 etc
Friday 08 June 2012, 06:58
It seems that this 'dumbing' down or programming only the standard repertory, with exceptions that fall in the other side (extreme avant-garde) is not only BBC R3 problem, as far I check from time to time France Musique practically does not broadcasts anymore its impressive archive of french music, from the Radio Lyrique troupe or the concerts of the ORTF orchestras, for instance. The same is true of Radio Clásica or Catalunya Música.

QuoteI will try to post then tomorrow.

Sorry about 'La Patria chica' but my memory was at fault, the recording I have is the one that Ataulfo Argenta did in 1958, that has been issued in CD. But if you are interested in Chapi, you can find in youtube the complete opera 'La muerte de Garcilaso', an absolute rarity.

About Ranki
QuoteSomeone at another blog posted one of his works titled simply "1512", but offered no explanation about this curious title. Is it a significant date in Hungary?
I had the same problem, but  this work could be 1514, fantasy for piano and orchestra from 1962, based on woodcuts of Derkovits (according New Grove). Checking Wikipedia, 1514 is the year of a peasant revolt in Hungary.

It is not always easy for me to verify the origin of a recording, so to know if it has been reissued in CD. Without more checking I can upload, if you are interested, 'La patria chica' and 'La venta de Don Quijote' both from Ruperto Chapí, as I am sure they are from concert broadcasts. Only the music, I always edit the dialogs, sorry.

Many thanks to shamokin88 for all his uploads, specially for those of Wallingford Riegger, one of my favorites American composers. I had no idea that his fourth symphony (the first work of him that I listened to) was related to the Spanish Civil War.
I am waiting expectantly for the John J. Becker's uploads. Becker is one of those composer whose works commercially available (mostly his third symphony) leave one asking for more!.

Composers & Music / Re: Sons of industry?

Gordon Getty (n.212 in Forbes list, according to Wikipedia) is a also classical composer. Marc Blitzstein was from a very well to do family, owner of a railroad company, I seem to remenber.
In Spain, Joaquim Homs (1906-2003), the main disciple of Robert Gerhard, was a well known industrial engineer.

Composers & Music / Re: Unsung music by unknown women
Tuesday 13 March 2012, 20:45
Two Spanish women composers that belong to this forum.

Matilde Salvador (Castellón de la Plana 1918-2007), composed two operas, the second of them, Vinatea was premiered in the Gran Treatre del Liceu in Barcelona (1974), five ballets and, foremost, a lot of vocal works. I will post in the Spanish Composers folder some of her works.

María Teresa Prieto (Oviedo 1896 - 1982, in México from 1937), composed symphonic and chamber works. Sorry no post, but her symphonic works, including her three symphonies (1942, 1945, 1951), ballet Palo Alto, symphonic poem Chiken Itza and others were issued in 2 CDs by Verso. You can find them probably in Amazon and for sure in emusic (I checked).

Sorry, but I only have recorded from 2 to 5, but the sheet music of this first symphony has been edited and published recently, so maybe there has been a performance and someone has recorded it, or there will be one in the near future. We could always hope...

If you like this kind of works(I do) I recommend the mystery play St.Urs und St.Victor, in a vein similar to Willy Burkhard, composed in 1945 but not performed til 1996. It was included in a CD issued by Musikszene Schweiz, conducted by his son Urs Joseph.
You can find also some concertos and a ballet issued by Gallo (I think) in emusic.

Best regards,

Romà
