Composers & Music / Halévy: Ba-ta-clan >> La Juive
Wednesday 01 June 2016, 21:30
Can this be true? It's on the homepage of the Slowakian National Opera in Bratislava.
Have they confused composer and work or have they unearthed something I can't find in any of my reference books or online?

Premiere, Friday, 7. April 2017, 19:00 / Hall of Opera and Ballet, the new building of SND
Fromental Halévy: Ba-ta -clan
A five-act opera

I can't ascertain if CPO will take it into their Reznicek series.

I have taken the trouble to compare the Wexford production against the vocal score and am horrified to find the cut are more substantial than I feared.
The are a total of 20 cuts amounting to 410 bars of music a few of which are incredibly short and make no sense dramatically or musically, to me at least.
I am not qualified to suggest how many minutes are missing, but given that the performance totals 113 minutes, I feel completeness would not have been out of order.
The experience of travelling to Wexford leaves me severely disappointed that one cannot rely on a house such as Wexford, whose reputation for exhuming rarities is almost unprecedented. I'm almost glad I don't possess the vocal scores for Koanga and Le Pré aux clercs! I have the impression that the sale of interval champagne and expensive memorabilia seem to be more important than giving us musical value for the expensive tickets.
Some years ago a production of Bizet's Carmen was labelled in the publicity as "a version": a fact I find perfectly justifiable when short measure is on offer.
As a young man I sang in a few amateur opera productions and the companies made no cuts whatsoever!
A text file listing details of the cuts is available under:

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Mascagni - Guglielmo Ratcliff
Wednesday 28 October 2015, 20:57
Much has been said on this forum about Mascagni and his Guglielmo Ratcliffe but having just come back from Wexford I can only thoroughly recommend the coming broadcast next Saturday evening (October 31st). I saw Gian-Carlo del Monaco's production in Bonn in 1997 which I thought impressive enough but this production in Wexford knocks all spots off it. From the opening notes I was rivetted by the production which would have been dramtically improved had there been no intervals. The music at the beginning of act 3 almost made my skin creep and Ratcliffe's voice (Angelo Villari) was almost too big for the Wexford stage.
The other two operas being presented this year - Koanga (Delius) and Le Pré aux clercs (Hérold) - will be transmitted on the successive Saturdays by RTÉ Lyrique at 8 p.m. Le Pré aux clercs is a co-production with the Opéra Comique as well as Palazzo Bru zane and is a real unsung!

Composers & Music / Sullivan (without Gilbert)
Tuesday 10 February 2015, 09:19
From the Sullivan Society homepage
The 2015 Sullivan Society conference will take place at the Royal Agricultural University. Cirencester on 11, 12 and 13 September 2015.
Among various talks Martin Yates will give an exposition on the score of The Light of the World. Can we hope that this unrecorded work in its full form will see the light of day?

Also announced:
The BBC Concert Orchestra and the BBC Singers, conducted by John Andrews, are  recording Sullivan's complete incidental music to The Tempest and Macbeth in February and March for issue on two separate CDs. This will be the first complete recording of the Macbeth music (although the concert suite is available on Naxos and the overture has been recorded several times), and the first complete recording since 1955 of The Tempest. The Macbeth recording will also include Sullivan's overture Marmion - the first recording of the complete version as the composer intended it.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Max Bruch "Die Loreley"
Monday 24 November 2014, 08:30
Did anyone record Max Bruch's opera Die Loreley last night from Bavarian Radio?

I didn't make the record button on time so have everything except part of the Vorspiel! I think only a minute or so is missing.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Fibich - Pád Arkuna
Saturday 11 October 2014, 21:52
Prague again!
I attended the second première of Fibich's complete Pád Arkuna (Helga as Prologue and Dargun as a 3 act opera) yesterday and can only urge anyone who's a Fibich fan and able to get to Prague to do so. Further performances 12th & 20th October 2014 as well as 28 January 2015 and 9th & 18th April 2015.
It was a production that won't be forgotten in a hurry and the music IMHO was Fibich at his best and a great pity that this opera apparently hasn't been staged for over 80 years. I was unable to discover if a recording has or is going to be made although it was filmed on a single camera yesterday - I presume for in-house consumption. Czech Television is listed in the programme as media partner, but there's no mention of possible transmission, DVD or CD. I feel it would be a disgrace if nothing is done to preserve such a deserving production. Total time is 2 hours 45 minutes!

Recordings & Broadcasts / Dvořák - Alfred
Saturday 11 October 2014, 21:35
Prague hosted the world premiere of the original version of Antonín Dvořák's opera Alfred on Wednesday 17th September. The work was performed within the framework of the international music festival "Dvořák Prague" with the original German libretto at a concert in the Rudolfinum. The concert has also been recorded and is supposed to be released on CD towards the end of the year. The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Heiko Mathias Förster, the main characters sung by Petra Froese, Jarmila Baxová, Ferdinand of Bottmer and Felix Hull. The score of the opera was not issued to Dvořák's lifetime, the work was only performed in 1938, in Olomouc in Czech translation.

For his first opera the 29-year-old Dvořák used the then 60 year old text from the German Romantic poet Karl Theodor Körner.

Composers & Music / Gounod's Cinq Mars
Monday 14 April 2014, 08:28
The foundation Palazetto Bru Zane never ceases to amaze with the opera rarities they sponsor. After Joncières' Dmitri (recently appeared) and Saint-Saëns' Les Barbares (to come) I have discovered that in the 2014-2015 season of the Theater an der Wien (Vienna) they are sponsoring a concert performance of Gounod's opera Cinq-Mars. The performance is scheduled for Tuesday, 27th January 2015 at 7 p.m.

Cinq Mars
Drame lyrique in four acts (1877)
Music by Charles Gounod
Libretto by Paul Poirson & Louis Gallet after Alfred de Vigny's historical novel of the same name (1826)

Concert performance in French

With Véronique Gens, Charles Castronovo and others.
Chorus of the Bavarian Radio
Munich Radio-Symphony Orchestra
Conducted by Ulf Schirmer

A co-production with the Palazetto Bru Zane Venice

The Munich Radio-Symphony Orchestra hasn't yet announced its programme for the coming season so I don't know if there will be a corresponding performance in Munich or hopefully a radio transmission from either Munich or Vienna.

Composers & Music / Saint-Saëns' Les Barbares
Monday 10 February 2014, 21:31
After Massenet's Le Mage from St. Etienne we can now look forward to another operatic rarity thanks to the support of the Palazzetto Bru Zane. Camille Saint-Saëns' opera Les Barbares is being retrieved from the archives. It's a tragédie lyrique in 3 acts and a prologue to a libretto by Victorien Sardou and Pierre-Barthélémy Gheusi. Concert performances are being given this coming Friday (14th) and Sunday (16th) in the Grand Théâtre Massenet in St. Etienne. A CD production is envisaged but I can't find advance notice of a possible radio transmission, so I guess we'll just have to wait for the Ediciones Singulares product to hear it.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Massenet - Bacchus

Don't get too excited, it's not the opera but 20 minutes of ballet music from the opera! At least it's a start. It isn't so far from Barcelona to St Etienne.

Also included is the ballet music from Thais, Hérodiade and Le Cid.
