The coupling's disppointing from a UC perspective, but this could be interesting nevertheless...
Frankly, I find this release self-defeating commercially and infuriating musically..who is going to want the n-th Eroica..played by an unknown (probably very good , but unknown) ensemble, with the archives overloaded with Eroicas played by the best orchestras, with the best conductors, in all manners of playing, HIP or not?
No one is going to buy it, and the poor Méhul woll remain furtherly and undeservedly unsung.
If they wanted to provide more commercial appeal, they could have paired it with some less known work by some more mainstream composer..but more Beethoven?
You're right. But I'll be buying it for the Méhul in the hope that it trumps the few available recordings.
..and it does trump them. It's a big, weighty, but vigorous (live) performance. Great for the promotion of Méhul's music!
