Composers & Music / Re: Lorenzo Perosi (1872-1956)
Monday 03 June 2019, 10:22
Renzo Bossi is (or was) present on disc.
The Agorà Cd, above quoted by Hadrianus about the "Intermezzi Goldoniani" by his father Marco Enrico, contains also a set of "Ricreazioni" of music of M.E. Bossi and a set of "Ricreazioni" of ancient italian music.IMHO i find it a playful record.
However a Bongiovanni Cd containing the Violin Concerto (1906), a "Dittico" for orch., "Otto canzoni" for strings, "Bianco e Nero"for orch.  presents IMHO the shortcomings in performances not unusually associated to the label.

Composers & Music / Re: 2019 unsung concerts

On the 22nd September Kazuky Yamada will conduct in Monte Carlo Juventus by Victor de Sabata (plus Elgar Sea Pictures with Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Saint-Saens Third Sympny).
On the 13rd March 2020 Yamada , again in Monte Carlo where he is principal, will conduct Chausson's Soir de Fete, Poème de l'Amour et de la Mer (with Veronique Gens) and the Symphony.
In rhe same place Susanna Mallki on the 4th April 2020 will conduct Magnard Third Symphony.

I would add Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt(two   symphonies) and Antal Dorati (one). And exists a Sinfonie Singuliere conducted by Sergiu Celibidache (with the Swedish Radio Orchestra), 2004 release, series " Great Conductors of the 20th Century".

Composers & Music / Re: Unsung Clarinet Concertos
Wednesday 27 March 2019, 10:53
I am not quite sure if qualifies the Duet-Concertino for clarinet, bassoon and string orchestra with harp by Richard Strauss (in another thread I mis-named it Idyll Concertino).
Fairly represented on record, it seems rather underperformed.

A material fault in the post above. The pianist in the Kubelik conducted recording is Pietro Scarpini, rather than Scarpetta.
BTW Michael Gielen (conductor in the Lively recording) has sadly just passed away. To him, dealing with Busoni, we owe a recording of the complete Turandot Suite, and two recordings of the Sarabande and Cortege.

Composers & Music / Re: André Previn (1929-2019)

He recorded also Goldmark Rustic Wedding Symphony, then (and now) much neglected; and also some R.Strauss concertos rather underperformed (Horn Concerto n.2, Idyll Concertino for clarinet and bassoon).
I am lucky to have seen him twice, the latter in London conducting a work much associated to him, Walton's First Symphony (outside the remit of this forum).

Composers & Music / Re: Best discovery for 2018
Wednesday 02 January 2019, 10:06
My best discovery for 2018 is Emilie Mayer Fourth Symphony (Capriccio recording) . I arrived late in hearing this Symphony, which I know appreciated since years by many in the forum.
One would really hear more music (and mostly more symphonies) from this excellent and surprising musician (even if the double Cd Capriccio is more than something)
If I should indicate a second title it would be the gentle and not over-ambitious First Violin Concerto by Josef B.Foerster (Supraphon-BBC recording).

At the " Christmas Concert" held in Teatro Regio Torino some days ago was performed Lullaby from Vaughan Williams "Hodie" for treble chorus and orchestra.
BTW the other works for the same medium were by John Rutter and Leroy Anderson.

Composers & Music / Re: Bruch Symphony No.2
Wednesday 24 October 2018, 18:05
In my  experience  of modest listener, Bruch Second Symphony is example of how much a work  can sound different in a decent rather than in an outstanding performance.
In the Lp period first I heard (several times) the Symphony from a Rca (formerly Louisville) record performed by the Louisville Orchestra conducted by Jorge Mester: the piece sounded good. BUT it sounded magnificent when I heard the Masur - Gewandhaus performance. In the Cd era I bought the Conlon  (and again the Masur).
(BTW I am glad that Conlon is for the third year principal conductor of the Italian Radio Orchestra in Torino, my city. This year he will conduct also Martucci Second Piano concerto, two Pieces by Sinigaglia (Hora Mystica for strings, Romanza for horn and orch.), and Zemlinsky Die Seejungfrau).

I don't know how often the three Griffes vocal poems are performed.
I was lucky in hearing them once in an actual concert at least twenty years ago , performed by the good wife-husband couple of Carole Farley and Josè Serebrier. Greatly impressed, later I bought a couple of recordings (Bryn-Julson Ozawa, Boston; Quintiliani Falletta, Buffalo Phil).
I knew before some Griffes works, appreciating most of them, finding difficulty with the Piano Sonata.

If I am not wrong the right title is Dom Sébastien (rather than Dom Sebastian).

In Torino 11/9/18 Henry Duparc "Aux Etoiles" (orch. Fil. di Torino, cond. G.Pretto)
1/2/19 Giuseppe Martucci Piano Concerto n.2
Leone Sinigaglia Hora mystica for strings, Romanza for horn and strings (G.Albanese, piano,
Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale RAI, cond.James Conlon)
14/3/19 Ernest Guiraud "Chasse Fantastique" (Orch.RAI, cond. C-.Carydis)
3/4/19  Rita Strohl Sonate dramatique "Titus and Berenice" for Cello and piano (E.Moreau, D.Kadouch,
who will perform the work in seceral cities)

Composers & Music / Gilda Ruta (1853-1932)
Monday 30 April 2018, 11:19
On the 4th of May in the castle of Rolle (Geneva Lake), and later in other venues (La Scala, Monte Carlo) Sonya Yonceva, who has attained star status, will held a recital of melodies for voice and piano with an unusual program.
Alongside Verdi, Puccini, Martucci (two songs from la Canzone dei Ricordi), Leoncavallo, Tosti, other rare names.
Among those two songs  of Gilda Ruta. She has a Wiki entry, which should contain some mistake.
Wiki states that Ruta "composed  more than 125 pieces for piano AND orchestra" I suppose "for piano OR orchestra". Does anybody know (at least the title) some orchestral work by Gilda Ruta?.

On the 18 May 2019 Herbert Blomstedt will conduct Stenhammar Second Symphony with the Berliner Philharmoniker in Berlin.
(BTW about reply 18 the Tonhalle Maag exists in Zurich; it is a smallish hall, other than the famous Tonhalle Zurich).
